Today we’d like to introduce you to Lee Jordan.
Hi Lee, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
About 30 years ago, I had something strange happen with my hands. They felt like squeezing something, making something. I had never had anything like that happen before. I figured out that I needed to find a sculpture class. It took me a year to find one. I studied with Robert Cunningham for 20 years before I moved to my own studio. Now, in addition to creating my own work I teach stone carving at Teale Sculpture Studio in Hawthorne.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Originally the hardest part was finding time to carve. I was excited yet still had to do my day job to pay the bills. My wife is completely supportive. It’s always great to bring a piece home and have a former set and interior designer appreciate what you do. And even my now adult children like my work, so I’ll always be able to put them somewhere.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Stone carving is a classic art. Unfortunately, it is difficult to find places around to interact with new work. I love that I am able to help new people experience the hands-on feel of using a hammer and chisel to create something fairly permanent, something that they make with their own hands. In much of my work, I like that it seems to have been discovered in an archeological dig or found in an ancient city. I strive to create a combination of clean, smooth, highly polished surfaces with the rough, untouched aspects of the raw hewn stone as a way to see something emerge from rock.
It’s always a thrill to see my work on a tv show or film, especially when I didn’t know that they had been rented for the show.
Any big plans?
Going forward is simply more. Cutting more stone, working with wood, sharing my expertise with anyone who would like to learn. Nothing too drastic. I’ve been having a good time, and I plan on continuing that.
