Today we’d like to introduce you to Kya Null.
Hi Kya, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Though I was born and raised in Austin, Texas, I always knew my place was in California. When I was growing up there, it was still what the public deemed a hidden gem, and what I deemed boring and too conservative for my taste. I wanted to work in fashion for as long as I can remember. While I don’t think my career is in designing anymore, I have such a core personal style and a love for clothing. I’m a big collector of all things vintage and want to share my love with the world.
When it came to college applications, my only goal was escape. I went to UC Santa Barbara to pursue my degree in the history of art and architecture, and along the way, cultivated my love for art, style, and fashion. While there, I served as the head of PR and marketing for the school’s fashion club, where I made my best friends who shared my common interest (I still live within walking distance of these girls in LA, what destiny).
Where some may find hesitation, I found pure excitement in my post-grad move to LA. I just knew I had to be here; I didn’t care where I lived or what I was doing, I just had to be in the heat of it. Luckily, everything worked out. While I was booting around Europe on a solo endeavour, my friend Brooke found us a place to live. My longtime best friend Evie knew I wanted to work in fashion, so she connected me with a designer friend of her mom’s who needed an assistant. It’s truly great, I get to learn more about fashion production, and work on my own career in styling on the side. Now I’m working a dream job with an icon and having the time of my life with my best friends, while driving around in my little leopard seat convertible, what could be better?
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Honestly, yes. I come from the great privilege of my parents supporting me through college, and with my move cross country, something I know not a lot of people can relate to. I’m very close with both my parents and do not know where I would be without them being my cheerleaders. All they want for me is to just pursue my dreams so they can live vicariously through me. My mom always says she has recurring dreams about my success (in exactly what I’d like to know so I can just do that), so she never worries for me, which makes me always worry a little less.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
At the moment, I work under esteemed photographer and designer Randee St. Nicholas. I first met Randee when I was 14, the summer before I started high school. My best friend Evie and I made a PowerPoint convincing our moms to take us to LA for her birthday to live out our Hollywood fantasies. Weirdly enough, it worked, and we got to come out here and visit one of Evie’s mom’s friends, Randee. Her and Evie’s mom met on the set of the music video “Kiss Me” by Sixpence None the Richer, a video in which Randee directed. I remember being in awe of her. She showed us the couch she used for a Britney Spears video, the wings she had made for Carrie Underwood, and told us stories about her time working with Prince. She had the dream career, and when I moved out here last year it was kismet that she needed an assistant. So I’ve been working under her ever since, learning more about the fashion side of things with her label RSN Boheme. Essentially, I run fabrics and patterns to our seamstresses and have the clothes made. It’s been fun and such a cool experience.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I’ve always been one with good luck. Whether self-proclaimed or pure delusion, I just believe good things happen to good people, and I try my best to have great karma. I think where I’m at in life is the result of hard work, but there definitely is an aspect of luck. You have to believe that every decision you’ve made is the right one, that all the places you’ve been and people you’ve met along the way have to be for a reason. Nothing is set in stone, and you have to give help to get help, and if you put good energy out into the world, be assured it will return to you.
