Rising Stars: Meet Kris Perry of From Los Angeles, Based in Orange County

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kris Perry.

Kris Perry

Hi Kris, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My journey into photography began at a young age, sparked by images seen in National Geographic Magazine. I loved how the images told stories that had me fascinated about life all over the world. My first camera was given to me by sister’s boyfriend at the time back in 1988. He gave a Canon AE-1, that I still have to this day.

From there, I started experimenting, first capturing things around me, then gradually developing a style and vision of my own. Over time, I honed my skills through practice, mentorship, and just staying curious. I’ve had the privilege of working on some incredible projects that have challenged and shaped me, and I’m still learning and evolving every day.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Not alway, like most journeys, there have been ups and downs. Life has a way of throwing unexpected challenges, and there were times when I had to put photography on the back burner to handle personal responsibilities. But through it all, I’ve been incredibly lucky to have the support of my family and friends. They’ve always believed in me and encouraged me to keep going, even when things got tough. That support has meant everything.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
While I specialize in concert photography, events, portraiture, and street photography, I don’t limit myself to a single style. My passion for photography is rooted in a desire to grow as an artist and to continually explore new ways of seeing and capturing the world around me. For me, it’s not just about focusing on one subject or genre, it’s about finding meaning in moments and translating that into visual stories that resonate. I’m best known for photographing The Boombox, a long-running party held every first Saturday of the month at the historic Grand Star Jazz Club in Chinatown. For the past 18 years, I’ve had the privilege of capturing legendary DJs and hip-hop artists at this event. This experience has played a major role in shaping my journey as a photographer. Photography, at its core, is how I express what I find to be beautiful, powerful, or worth remembering. My work is rooted in capturing real, unscripted moments. Whether it’s the energy of a live show, the emotion in a portrait, or the everyday beauty found in the streets. What sets me apart from other photographers is that it’s never been about competition or trying to outdo anyone. For me, it’s about sharing my perspective. This is how I see the world, and this is how I choose to document it.

What matters most to you?
What matters most to me is family, friends, staying healthy, and being present for the people who need me. There’s so much happening around us every day, and it’s easy to get caught up in the grind. But taking time to check in, be there, and just see your people, even if it’s just for a quick reset, means everything to me. That connection is what keeps me grounded, inspired, and moving forward.
