Today we’d like to introduce you to Khiley (Sissy B.) Braxton.
Khiley (Sissy B.), we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started my business as a birthday celebration alternative. When the Pandemic first began in 2020 and our world changed in so many ways, birthday celebrations changed as well. So many people had to get creative on how they celebrated. Some had zoom celebrations and others had drive-by birthdays. I started my children’s nail polish business. Lucky for me, my mom had been saving all year for my birthday trip, so she took that money and invested it into starting my company.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
When I first launched my business, it only took a few weeks for my company to receive national attention. I was on several news outlets, newspapers, radio interviews, Dr. Oz and even worked with Jackie Aina and Helpful Honda. As the world began to open back up and I returned to in-person school, things slowed way down. I went from receiving online sale orders every single day to going weeks without an order. I went from speaking at different schools across the nation to no speaking appearances. This time was difficult, but my mom helped me to stay motivated. I learned that it is more to a business than actual sales. Mindset is everything. My mom would send me motivational videos mostly from TikTok to help me grow a positive mindset. Now business is slowly picking back up.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
What I love most about my company is that I get to do things that I love. I have always loved polishing my nails. I also love TikTok and now I use it to help grow my business. I am most proud of the times when I was able to speak at different schools and encourage other kids that they can do anything they put their mind to. What sets me apart from others is my ability to “hit my reset button”. When I am frustrated or upset, I can take a minute to pause, close my eyes, take a deep breath and start over. I do not give up easy. What sets my company apart from others is that my nail polish is for children. It is toxin-free, scent-free, water base and peel off. It was important for me to have my face on my logo and to also have some of the names of my colors be representative to my culture. This sets me apart because I did not see these things in stores or with other children’s nail polishes.
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
In five years, I will be in the 11th grade and I want my company to be in nationwide stores like Target and Walmart. In ten years, I will be graduating from college and I see my company being a household brand where under every Christmas tree it will be a box wrapped with Sissy B. Nails on the inside. At every birthday party, Sissy B. Nails will be the most sought-after gift.
