Rising Stars: Meet Kelsey Fugere of Altadena

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelsey Fugere.

Hi Kelsey, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’ve been documenting people, places, and things with a camera since high school — before I even knew it could be a career, I just knew it made sense to me. It was instinctual. Back then, I’d dress up my friends, do their makeup, pose them, and turn any space into a photoshoot. I loved playing with the images afterward, adding fun effects, trying out textures, colors, filters — whatever felt expressive.

The camera quickly became my favorite way to make sense of the world. It gave me a reason to look closer, to notice things, to celebrate beauty in all its forms. It wasn’t about being perfect — it was about capturing a feeling, a mood, a moment.

Photography has always been more than just pictures to me. It’s been a way of connecting, creating, and seeing with intention — and that’s still what drives me today.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I consider myself very fortunate — I haven’t faced too many major roadblocks, and I’m grateful for that. But if I’m being real, one of the biggest challenges has been learning not to take things personally. When you care deeply about your work, it’s easy to attach emotion to every opportunity, every client interaction, every outcome.

Over the years, I’ve learned that business is business — and that not every “no” is a reflection of my value or my talent. Developing a thicker skin has been part of my growth. These days, I approach client negotiations and creative feedback with much more ease and confidence. It’s made me not only a better businessperson, but a more grounded and balanced creative.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a photographer, videographer, and creative director specializing in beauty, product, and lifestyle work — mostly in the commercial space. I love collaborating with skincare, cosmetics, and wellness brands to create imagery that feels both intentional and artful.

Over the years, I’ve developed a strong studio practice and am known for my ability to paint with light — balancing precision with softness, and concept with emotion. Whether I’m shooting a still image or crafting motion content, I aim to create visuals that feel alive and full of feeling.

What I’m most proud of is how I’ve continued to evolve while staying true to the creative spark that first drew me to photography. Whether it’s a campaign shoot or a more personal, experimental series, I approach every project with curiosity, care, and a deep respect for the story I’m telling.

What sets me apart is that I don’t just show up to take the photo or video — I help shape the vision. Clients come to me for my eye, but they stay because of the way I collaborate. I bring both creative direction and execution to the table, and I genuinely care about the process and the people involved. I think that heart shows in the work.

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
My biggest advice when it comes to networking is simple: don’t burn bridges — even if you don’t align with someone’s values or approach. In creative industries, people move around all the time, and you never know when paths will cross again. I’ve learned that it’s possible to maintain boundaries and protect your own integrity without completely cutting ties or closing doors.

What’s worked well for me is staying genuinely curious about the people I’ve worked with and finding organic reasons to stay in touch. Whether it’s checking in to share new work, sending a quick congratulations on a career move, or even just saying thank you — small, thoughtful gestures go a long way. Relationships take time, and nurturing them consistently (without expecting anything in return) has brought me some of my best opportunities.

Also, don’t be afraid to reach out to people you admire. Even a short message can open the door to a meaningful connection.
