Rising Stars: Meet Kaliyah Killens

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kaliyah Killens.

Hi Kaliyah, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I originally started I.CONIC is back in college. It began as a class assignment and I began to use it in real life. I put my portfolio online and had several people reaching out for local fashion shows and pop-ups.

A few years later, I launched more products and clothing with a 2000s focus. My core inspiration is from 2000s media (film, tv, and music videos) and felt authentic to the resurgence of the aesthetic.

With help, I created a website and revamped social media ( mainly Instagram tried Pinterest and tik tok as well).

During the summer of 2022, I did my first 2000s-inspired pop-up in the arts district. I had sold out of several items which gave me the motivation to continue with I.CONIC. I was accepted into a Tech cohort, and I learned more about marketing, photography, ads, etc. I was able to take that knowledge into profit.

Since January 2023, I have done four pop-ups where I had sold out of several items at almost each one. I plan on continuing a monthly schedule for potential I.cons to shop in real life to see the I.CONIC experience.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It has not been as smooth as I anticipated! The struggle of staying inspired and creative while real life is happening is hard. I work a full-time job and make time for I.CONIC every day. Slower seasons can be discouraging, but I’ve learned resilience from my parents. Each time it gets hard, I double down and am finding solutions to keep the momentum going.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
In addition, to working on I.CONIC I am a style advisor (digital stylist) for a luxury department store. I specialize in women’s, trend, workwear, unisex and streetwear styling. I’m known to find pieces for my customers that they wouldn’t have tried in their own and giving a comfort push outside of your typical style. I’m most proud of balancing styling and I.CONIC. What sets me apart is my experiences, personality and creativity. I haven’t lived an average life!

How do you think about happiness?
I make a conscious effort to think about happiness daily. From practicing gratitude, laughter, doing things, or being around people that bring me joy. Happiness is a self-commitment, and I’m actively choosing it.
