Rising Stars: Meet Juss Thrasher of Los Angeles

Today we’d like to introduce you to Juss Thrasher

Hi Juss, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
From an unexpected phone call to award-winning filmmaker, my journey in cinema began in 2016 during a pivotal moment of self-discovery. When emerging New York director Yaniel Paulino approached me to write a feature-length screenplay, I embraced the challenge despite having no prior experience. This opportunity arrived at a crucial juncture – having recently lost my job, I found myself at a crossroads, searching for direction.

What began as a leap of faith evolved into “Greyscale,” my debut screenplay. The project demanded patience and perseverance, taking years to transition from page to screen. Driven by my commitment to the craft, I relocated from New York to Los Angeles to immerse myself in the heart of the film industry. Our dedication was rewarded when “Greyscale” captured The Audience Award for Best Feature Film at the 2020 Chelsea Film Festival.

This recognition catalyzed my career as a writer and producer, leading to a continued collaboration with Paulino on our second feature film, “Something of Value,” slated for release on a major streaming platform in 2025. Building on this momentum, I’ve expanded my creative horizons by developing “Unrequited,” an LGBTQ+ TV pilot set to premiere on QuickFlick TV in 2025.

Throughout this journey, I’ve discovered that success in filmmaking isn’t merely about talent – it’s about unwavering consistency, resilience in the face of uncertainty, and maintaining a clear vision of your aspirations. As I continue to develop both short films and independent features, I remain committed to crafting authentic, compelling stories that resonate with audiences worldwide.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Breaking into the film industry has been a journey marked by formidable challenges and profound growth. Initially, I navigated an unfamiliar landscape without industry experience, professional networks, or even command of the technical vocabulary that forms the foundation of filmmaking. These early obstacles tested my resolve, but they also shaped my understanding of the industry’s intricate dynamics.

Even now, with established credentials, I encounter periods of uncertainty and creative stagnation. Yet, I’ve learned that success in this field demands adaptability and unwavering determination. In an industry where some voices question the value of diverse narratives, I stand firm in my conviction that my perspective as a gay Black filmmaker carries unique importance. My experiences and identity aren’t just personal attributes – they’re essential elements that inform my storytelling and contribute to broader representation in cinema.

I carry a deep sense of responsibility to share authentic stories that resonate with individuals who rarely see themselves reflected on screen. Every project I undertake is driven by the knowledge that somewhere, a young person is searching for validation and visibility in the stories they consume. While the path in this industry remains challenging, I’ve discovered that persistence, coupled with authenticity, can transform seemingly insurmountable barriers into stepping stones toward meaningful impact.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
As a multifaceted filmmaker, I navigate the intersecting roles of screenwriter, producer, and selective director. While my creative foundation lies in writing and producing, I step into the director’s chair for projects that demand my distinct creative vision – stories that resonate so deeply with my artistic sensibilities that I feel compelled to shepherd them personally from concept to screen.

My latest endeavor, the LGBTQ+ TV pilot “Unrequited,” represents the culmination of my comprehensive approach to filmmaking. As creator, writer, producer, and director, I embraced the full spectrum of creative and logistical challenges. This project served as a masterclass in independent filmmaking, demanding every skill I’ve developed while pushing me to expand my capabilities further. The experience of building a narrative world from the ground up – from initial concept through final cut – has profoundly deepened my understanding of the craft.

What distinguishes me in this industry is my unwavering commitment to forging my own path. Rather than waiting for opportunities to present themselves, I actively create them. My philosophy centers on the belief that authentic storytelling requires both bold initiative and meticulous execution. This mindset, combined with my relentless work ethic and distinctive narrative voice, drives me to transcend traditional industry boundaries. I’ve learned that true innovation in filmmaking comes not from following established patterns, but from having the courage to bring fresh perspectives to universal stories.
