Rising Stars: Meet Joy Sobhanian of Fullerton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joy Sobhanian.

Hi Joy, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I founded the Breeze of Joy Foundation in 2021 with my wife, Dr. Soha Sobhanian, rooted in our shared belief that education, equity, and compassion are essential to meaningful social progress. We both come from cultures where the education of men was often prioritized over that of women, and where social and religious barriers made access to education—especially higher education—far more difficult for girls. These experiences shaped our conviction that a society can only truly advance when women and men are empowered equally. Dr. Sobhanian was fortunate to pursue education to the highest levels, and witnessing its transformative power instilled in her a deep sense of responsibility to give back. As both an educator and a mother, she believes education must extend beyond academics to include physical, moral, and spiritual development. Her journey strongly influenced our decision to create opportunities—particularly for girls—so they can realize their full potential. We see children as a community’s greatest trust; how they are guided and educated shapes the future they will create. While we strongly believe in equality, we also recognize that when resources are limited, educating girls creates an especially powerful ripple effect. Women shape families, raise future generations, and anchor their communities. By uplifting girls, we invest not only in individuals, but in the long-term health of society. Education grounded in love, discipline, and purpose allows each child to turn knowledge into service. Service has always been part of who I am. From a young age, I helped younger children with their studies and assisted elders with everyday needs. A turning point for me came after watching the documentary Dangerous Ways to School, which revealed the extreme risks many children take simply to access education. Seeing their courage transformed my concern into a commitment to act. The Breeze of Joy Foundation grew out of conversations between Dr. Sobhanian and me and was strengthened early on by people who shared our vision. One of the first was Dr. Michelle Ding, who played a key role in helping establish the foundation. Having previously worked as a dentist in Malaysia, Dr. Ding witnessed firsthand the barriers faced by women in the region. Those experiences deeply shaped her belief in education as a pathway to dignity and opportunity. As the vision expanded, Shamim Imani joined us. A close friend and entrepreneur, he shared our commitment to advancing women—especially in underprivileged communities. His belief in empowerment through opportunity and sustainable impact helped solidify the foundation during its formative stages. Our work is also enriched by Sirus Thampi, who brings a deeply personal connection to the mission. His mother founded a primary school in Thailand, and growing up around that work shaped his lifelong understanding of education as a catalyst for change. This background drives his dedication to creating opportunities for children who might otherwise be overlooked. Adding a global and human lens to our leadership is Ron Conigliaro, a world-renowned photographer. Through decades of international work, Ron has witnessed both the hardships and resilience of communities with limited access to education. His perspective continually reminds us that behind every challenge is a human story deserving of dignity and hope. Completing our leadership team is Tahireh Thampi Kuehn, a school principal in Thailand and a passionate advocate for education. Her on-the-ground experience in school leadership brings invaluable insight into student development and strengthens our commitment to holistic and meaningful learning. Today, the Breeze of Joy Foundation supports 18 girls through full scholarships, covering tuition, books, uniforms, transportation, meals, and essential living expenses. Our mission extends beyond academics—we focus on nurturing physical, moral, and spiritual growth, helping students build resilience, confidence, and a sense of belonging. While we know we cannot help everyone, we remain committed to serving with empathy and intention—uplifting society one child, one opportunity, and one breeze of joy at a time.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The journey has been both smooth and challenging, and in many ways, the challenges have been our greatest teachers. We began with a bold vision and deep compassion, but not always the financial resources to match our hopes. There were many moments when we encountered stories that touched our hearts—children full of potential and families in urgent need—yet we had to make difficult choices to ensure our support was thoughtful, responsible, and sustainable. These experiences taught us how to balance empathy with long-term impact.

Another area of growth was ensuring trust and accountability across distances. We learned the importance of building strong local partnerships so that funds directly empower students rather than being absorbed by bureaucracy. This process strengthened our commitment to transparency and reinforced the values at the heart of our mission.

Coordinating a global board while balancing professional and family responsibilities also presented challenges. However, this became a source of strength, fostering deeper collaboration and mutual respect among our team. Looking back, each obstacle opened doors—to stronger systems, deeper relationships, and a clearer sense of purpose. The struggles were real, but so was their transformative power, helping both our foundation and each of us grow in meaningful ways.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My formal background is in mechanical engineering, but it has never been what truly drives me. The guiding force in my life is a deep commitment to serving humanity and empowering those around me. I believe that meaningful work is measured not by titles, but by its impact on people’s lives.

Photography has been an important creative outlet and a bridge to meaningful connections. Through it, I have built lasting friendships across the world with individuals who share a passion for empathy, service, and human connection. It has taught me to see people with dignity and understanding.

Professionally, my work in hospitality has shown me the transformative power of kindness, presence, and positive energy. A sincere smile or thoughtful word can create belonging and uplift others. I see work itself as a form of service when done with intention and care.

My wife and I are deeply engaged in serving our local community by supporting children’s classes that focus on character development, teaching virtues, and creating a safe, nurturing space for families. Beyond our local efforts, we are also committed to building a primary school in rural India that currently serves more than 250 students, providing both education and hope for the future.

What I am most proud of is living in alignment with my values—using my skills, relationships, and resources to uplift others. What sets me apart is a belief that lasting change begins with service, education, and genuine human connection, carried out with consistency, humility, and love.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
We believe that what many people call luck is really purpose unfolding. In our lives and work, we’ve come to see that things happen for a reason, even if that reason isn’t clear at the beginning. When my wife, Soha, and I felt the desire to help children who don’t have the same opportunities our daughters have been blessed with, we didn’t know exactly where that path would lead. But as we took steps forward, the right people appeared, doors opened, and our foundation began to take shape in ways that felt deeply affirming.

We’ve learned that when intentions are sincere and followed by action, support shows up—sometimes quietly, sometimes unexpectedly. The friendships formed along the way, rooted in shared purpose and service, have been some of the most meaningful outcomes of this journey.

We don’t really see life in terms of good or bad luck. Instead, we see connection, effort, and timing working together. Even challenges often carry lessons that strengthen our mission and help us grow. To us, “luck” is simply what happens when you plant a seed with care and trust that, in time, it will grow.
