Today we’d like to introduce you to Jess Onesto
Hi Jess, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Oh, my love for creativity really started as a kid! Thinking back, I was always diving headfirst into something new. I’d be sketching fashion designs one day, then trying to sew my own little purses and skirts the next, and of course, capturing everything with my trusty pink Barbie camera! I just loved bringing ideas to life.
Professionally, my journey began in the fine art world. I earned my BFA in photography and art history, which gave me a really strong foundation. But honestly, stumbling into wedding photography felt like a stroke of pure luck. I had the incredible opportunity to intern with a wedding photographer in college, and it just clicked. I was so passionate about it that I started my own business while I was still finishing my degree, at the grand old age of 20. It was a whirlwind, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything. It was like all those childhood creative sparks found their perfect outlet.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As most creative folks know, the road to success is rarely smooth. I quickly discovered that photographing weddings is one thing, and running a wedding photography business is another. There have been peaks and valleys throughout my dozen years in this business, from the highs of shooting destination work on the Amalfi Coast to the lows of figuring out how to manage inquiries and editing while on maternity leave. What I’ve realized is that the challenges don’t really disappear as you grow; they just evolve. It’s like each new stage brings its own set of adventures, and you just keep learning and adapting. And honestly, that’s part of what makes it so rewarding.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m here to tell the honest, giddy story of your wedding. My last name — Onesto — actually means honest and my work truly leads with that. I take a documentary and emotionally driven approach and infuse that with more editorial and artfully directed portraiture. Your wedding day isn’t another photoshoot for me; it’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience for you and your guests.
I specialize in multi-day celebrations here in California and abroad. Some of my recent travels include Sydney, the Amalfi Coast, and Sayulita Nayarit.
As for what sets me apart, I think it’s a blend of my fine art background and my genuine passion for people. My art history training gives me a unique perspective on composition and storytelling, but it’s my ability to connect with people on a personal level that truly makes a difference. Plus, I’ve been told that I have a knack for melting away any nerves you may have about being photographed. I really invest myself in each couple’s story and family, and I think that comes through in my work. I’m not just capturing a wedding; I’m capturing a deeper story and legacy, and that’s something really special.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
