Rising Stars: Meet Jeanette Airen of Central Thousand Oaks

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jeanette Airen.

Hi Jeanette, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My journey began with a love for music and storytelling. After earning my degrees in Music and Musical Theater and continuing my training in vocal performance and acting, I spent several years performing at major venues and working as a singer-songwriter. Those experiences deeply shaped me as both an artist and educator.

In 2006, I founded JA Vocal Music in my home studio in Lake Balboa. What started as a small vocal studio quickly grew into a thriving performing arts school with multiple instructors offering voice, instrumental, and acting lessons. Building that studio from the ground up taught me so much about leadership, community, and the power of arts education.

In 2014, I returned to my hometown in the Conejo Valley and made the bittersweet decision to close that chapter and start fresh. That leap of faith led to the creation of Jeanette Airen Performing Arts Studio. What began again as a voice-focused program has grown into a full performing arts studio offering musical theater productions, camps, classes, private lessons, and community performances for performers of all ages.

Throughout my career, I’ve worked extensively in local elementary and middle schools as a music specialist and also helping to build chorus and after-school theater programs. That work reinforced my belief that the arts are about so much more than performance — they build confidence, creativity, communication skills, and character.

Today, my studio’s mission is to inspire students to realize their full potential through high-quality performing arts education. We focus not just on technique, but on developing confident, collaborative, and expressive individuals who are willing to take risks and grow. Watching students step on stage for the first time, discover their voice, and believe in themselves — that’s what keeps me passionate about what I do.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely hasn’t been a completely smooth road. One of the unique challenges of running a performing arts studio is staffing. Many of our instructors are working performers — incredibly talented, passionate artists who serve as amazing role models for our students. However, because they are actively pursuing their careers, opportunities sometimes take them in new directions.

While transitions can be challenging, I’ve always believed in supporting my team’s dreams, just as we encourage our students to pursue theirs. Each instructor who has been part of the studio has contributed something special, and I’m grateful for the incredible team we have now. They bring professionalism, heart, and creativity to our students every day, and together we continue to grow stronger.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
At Jeanette Airen Performing Arts Studio, we provide comprehensive performing arts training for students of all ages. We specialize in vocal technique, musical theater, and performance skills, offering private lessons, group classes, full-scale productions, and camps. While strong technical training is the foundation of what we do, we are equally focused on developing confident, expressive performers who know how to connect authentically with an audience.

I’m known for blending professional-level expectations with a nurturing, encouraging environment. I teach students not just how to sing or act, but how to interpret material, make bold choices, and develop their own artistic voice. Our productions and showcases are high quality and thoughtfully produced, giving students real performance experiences that feel exciting and meaningful.

One thing that truly sets our studio apart is our commitment to making sure every student has the opportunity to shine. We intentionally keep our class and cast sizes small so that each performer receives meaningful stage time — including singing solos and speaking lines. This balanced participation allows even our shy or less experienced students to build confidence, work through stage fright, and experience success in a safe and supportive space.

What I’m most proud of is seeing the long-term impact of that foundation. Many former students have gone on to appear on national television shows like The Voice, The X Factor, and American Idol. Others have built professional careers performing at places like Universal Studios Hollywood and Universal Studios Japan, touring with bands, performing on cruise ships, and entertaining at events across the country. One former student even went on to win a Grammy Award for co-writing a gospel song.

But just as meaningful to me are the students who simply discover confidence, courage, and a love for performing. Watching them grow — whether into professionals or into more self-assured individuals — is the greatest reward.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
I truly believe mentorship and networking are about relationships, not transactions. Early in my career, I sought out teachers, directors, and producers whose work I respected and focused on learning from them — not just asking for opportunities. Showing up prepared, being dependable, and maintaining a positive attitude goes a long way. People remember how you make them feel and how you show up.

For finding a mentor, I always encourage people to look for someone whose path aligns with where they want to grow. Don’t be afraid to ask questions, ask for feedback, and stay curious. A good mentor doesn’t just open doors — they challenge you to raise your standards.

In terms of networking, what has worked best for me is staying involved in the community. Teaching in local schools, collaborating with other artists, attending performances, and supporting others’ projects has naturally led to meaningful connections. Networking doesn’t have to feel forced; when you invest in your community and genuinely support others, relationships develop organically.

Most importantly, lead with generosity. When you focus on adding value and building real connections, opportunities tend to follow.
