Rising Stars: Meet Jason Phillips of SAN FRANCISCO

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jason Phillips

Hi Jason, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started working with youth at the age of 14. My journey began with elementary and middle school students, as a mentor and camp counselor. Over time I navigated towards the path of education, working in schools around the SFUSD mentoring and tutoring youth. In June of 2025, I will be celebrating 22 years working with youth.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
For the most part it has been a solid road, but overall there has been minimal struggles. Some struggles i have faced is with funding with and trying to undue some of the flaws in our education system. For example I’ve worked with youth who are reading way below their grade level. It’s sad to witness

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I personally specialize in mathematics. I’ve been tutoring youth in math for about 13 years. I’m most proud of the youth I’ve worked with throughout the years attend and graduating from both HBCU’s and PWI’s. What’s sets me apart from others are the genuine relationships I’ve fostered with students and staff over the years. I strive to be a positive beacon for the youth that cross my path. I encourage them to be their best self.

Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I believe that it is important to take risk in life. At times we can become stagnant, due to be comfortable. We must take a leap of faith, because a vision without action is just a dream. Sometimes we let our own fears imprison us, because of the idea of failure. I personally plan on taking more risk in my own personal life. For example I want to do more with my Travel business (IG: @Melanated Footprints), and work on a non-profit educational program I want to create in the near future. My goal is to put more effort into both of those avenues before 2025 is over
