Rising Stars: Meet Ivy James of Los Angeles

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ivy James

Hi Ivy, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started singing as soon as I could talk- and writing as soon as I could write. I was always very creatively set in my ways, as it’s always been my strongest area. And I always did music in school, and got my first handful of on stage experiences from that, but then eventually life got too busy and I made the choice to move to homeschool. But since then I’ve worked so incredibly hard to get to where I am today. I just came off of my very first tour it’s been really cool to see how far I’ve come since just last year. It’s been so much work, but so worth it.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely has not always been a smooth road, as someone who is a not only a women but who is also young- it’s really difficult to get people to have the automatic token of respect for you like they would anyone else. Whether it’s when you walk into a room with execs or sit down at a writing session I always feel like I have to work 10x harder to gain the people I’m working with respect. And people will try to take advantage of how “naive” they think you are even if you really aren’t- people can’t seem to unwind themselves from their reality of you.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a singer and songwriter for the most part! And I write alternative folk music- combing all of the elements of my favorite genres and bands into one project that can only be described as “Ivy James”.
I’m most known for my song “Unravel Myself”, often compared to songs by Big Thief and Joni Mitchell, it’s a very soft song about love and acceptance.
I think what sets me apart from others is my constant engagement with fans- I live each of them so dearly and make it such a priority of mine to respond to every comment, dm, and message I get if it’s a true fan. Because I don’t want to see disconnected from the people who really matter- which is my fans.

Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
You have to learn how to rely on yourself. Learning how to produce my own demos more specifically- being able to create detailed demos before going into the studio is an absolute game changer, you have a clearer idea of what you want and how to execute it. It has seriously changed everything for me just being able to make somewhat decent demos of all of my songs.
