Rising Stars: Meet Isabella Almeida

Today we’d like to introduce you to Isabella Almeida.

Hi Isabella, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My love for photography began when I was 13 years old and my grandma let me use her camera on vacation in Hawaii. Ever since then, I have had a camera in my hand, constantly taking pictures of the world around me. The big shift from hobby to “this is what I want to do with my life” was when I had to make a decision about where I wanted to go for college. This led me to Pratt Institute in Brooklyn NY, where I spent a year studying photography and other art forms. After a year. I realized that I really just wanted to work. I wanted to start building my career. So it was time to return home to Los Angeles, where I had the connections to begin building a business. For the past two years, I’ve assisted and freelanced, learning and making connections through workshops, all while also working with some extremely talented and hard-working creatives. This has all led me to where I am today; print and online published, and working with models and influencers who have become some of my favorite people. I’m very excited for what is to come and I can’t wait to share some big projects that are coming up.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I don’t think that there IS a smooth road on the creative journey, let alone as a young woman in a male-dominated industry. But what I have been through and experienced has shaped me, pushed me to grow, and influenced my work. There’s a lot of quiet space sometimes, especially when you’re just starting out. People don’t know who you are, so getting work and getting people interested in shooting with you is more difficult. I am, however, very lucky to be surrounded by an amazing support system who is right there with me through all of the “what am I doing/I’m failing” days, and also for all of the milestones and celebrations.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Well, I’m a Los Angeles-based female photographer who specializes in Portrait and Fashion photography. I work with models to create fun and creative concepts and also with influencers to help them create their social media content. The project that I am most proud of at this moment is my Best Friend Project, which was just published in PUMP Fashion Magazine. I think the thing that sets me apart is my skill in creating a safe and enjoyable shoot space and working with a predominantly female team.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
My favorite thing about Los Angeles is that it’s home. From being able to get some of the best food in the country to being able to go to the beach, the mountains, and the desert all in the same week, it doesn’t get much better than that. One of my favorite things in the world is to go on drives, so being able to drive pretty much everywhere here is amazing. LA is a melting pot, and getting to experience so many cultures and so much history is one of the things I truly love about Los Angeles.
