Today we’d like to introduce you to Devonric Johnson.
Devonric, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
A former All-American Linebacker at SMU with a BA in Economics and Finance. I went to the Coopers Institute for my Personal Training Education. I have over 10 years of experience including management at Mayweather, Soho House, Golds Gym, and Crunch.
I’ve been a fitness spokesperson and model that has worked with over 20 different brands domestically and internationally. I have been an On Camera Fitness Trainer for Forme Life, Freeletics, and Inside Hook Magazine. My creation of HIIT Kung Fu, a total body fitness class inspired by Jeet Kune Do, has been featured in multiple gyms including Equinox, Crunch, and 24 Hour.
As the Former Regional Fitness Director for Mayweather Boxing + Fitness, I helped launch and pilot new programming for the West Los Angeles territory. Previous to Mayweather I was the founding Head Coach at Soho Warehouse in Los Angeles, where I successfully helped Soho House launch its flagship gym and brand Soho Active.
Now I’m a fully independent and started my own brand, Fit by Devonric. Using my experience to motivate, inspire and guide all those who I get the opportunity to coach.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I was born in prison to a drug-addicted mother, grew up homeless, and lived on the streets in my early years. Sports and fitness help shape my life when I was 13. I got adopted and my entire life went in a different direction.
Nothing I feel will be as rough as what I went through as a kid. Have there been obstacles, of course, but they have just been speed bumps in comparison. Being an entrepreneur can be exciting and scary. My past has prepared for the road ahead.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Celebrity Trainer and Boxing Coach.
I am very proud that I have the opportunity to work with multiple brands like Sohohouse, Nike, Forme Life, and vast array of others.
I think what sets me apart is that I have been in many different positions in fitness from high-level sports to management being in front of the camera to being a fitness consultant. I acquired a lot different viewpoints on what works and what doesn’t.
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc.?
The Alchemist is my favorite book that I read once a year. It helps me not get complacent.
I love listening to Gary Vaynerchuck or Gary Veer’s podcast. He always has a very insightful and a different ways keeping yourself motivated.
I also love watching Jon Bernthal’s podcast. It’s raw and always hits home.
