Rising Stars: Meet Devin Cousin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Devin Cousin.

Hi Devin, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Well to start off, I was raised by a musically inclined family on both sides. My mother was the biggest inspiration to my music dreams. As a child, I always heard stories from her and family members about the legacy she built in her community from her singing. Talent shows, pageants, whatever. She even performed with Faith Hill who at the time wanted them both to send off a demo to Nashville. I could tell music was her first true love and she still wanted to live her dream out, which is why she was always supportive of mine. My mom said she never regretted not choosing music after giving birth to me because she knew she had a star and had so much faith in what I could do ever since I started. Around the age of seven, my dad bought me my first CD which was Bow Wow’s “Beware of Dog” and that changed my life forever. Seeing a youngin’ rock the mic and entertain a crowd the way he did made me want to do it and more. At the time, I was also learning more about Southern Hip-Hop emcees from my godfather/uncle such as David Banner, Scarface, Outkast, T.I, Ludacris, etc. My uncle on my father’s side introduced me to Midwest cats like Common & Kanye as well. My personal life impacted my music more than anything though. I started writing songs about my upbringing around the age of 12. From my day-to-day living of seeing the result of cancer with my grandparents and/or mother to love interest and my college life experiences. The family I have met along the way of my journey has been more than inspiring also, and in many different aspects. Luckily, the journey led me here and will continue to lead me where I’m needed more so than where I want to be.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Far from a smooth road. Being from Mississippi, resources always seemed so out of reach for me as an artist. Sometimes they still do honestly, but like any occupation, the longer you work at it the better you get and the more you know. From figuring out my core fanbase to creating a brand for myself, learning the ropes of proper networking, etc. It gets exhausting handling everything by yourself. But I eventually came across some amazing friends that helped take the load off of my back. Even having a team has its difficulties, but you manage and learn how to adjust from being so self-sufficient to trusting those around to play their role. But along with more help comes more needs for finances which as an upcoming indie artist, isn’t as accessible as you’d like for it to be. Then comes the personal struggles you may face. You may spend countless hours putting your heart into a craft that you love more than anything in the world just to lose relationships with friends and family for numerous reasons. Though I know my mom would never want me to regret doing what I needed to do to get to the next level, I wish that I wouldn’t have spent so much time in the studio when I could have been home to spend more time with my family. The biggest struggle is balance.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a Hip-Hop/R&B artist but I love to experiment with sounds to test my versatility. I enjoy songwriting so I’m venturing out to assist other artists in that field. I would say that I stand out mainly because of how well-rounded of an artist I am. Whether it’s rap, r&b, afrobeat, house, pop, country, I can do it all. And I think I’m mostly proud of myself for not being afraid of my dream anymore. If it weren’t for that, I wouldn’t feel like the artist that I know I am.

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
My entire village deserves credit! From my family to my homies. My little cousins who treat me like the biggest star to walk this Earth will never understand how much they’ve encouraged me to go further. My WOLFPACK team who will drop everything to make me shine like the Sun. My mother for being the best and biggest number 1 fan there is. My family & homies for keeping me in check and grounded. I love them all and without any of them, I wouldn’t be Maccc from The PACK.
