Today we’d like to introduce you to Desiree Choy.
Hi Desiree, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Oh man, where to begin! I love to sing the minute I could, and it’s been the constant ever since. I knew from a really young age that I wanted to be a singer and actor, and that’s truly never changed. Life took its course and I did a lot of things to try to veer away from it for the sake of “practicality,” only to come right back. Making my own music has been a more recent adventure, and I’m having a lot of fun approaching with a really open and beginner’s mindset. So far, people have described my sound as “cinematic,” and I love that because it feels like an organic bridge between my film background and my music writing process. I tend to visualize scenes as I write lyrics, and really feel the feelings I’m thinking about first.
Through it all, I’ve learned to trust my own voice and not be so harsh on myself. There’s value in trying, in doing, and “failing,” though you really never fail when you bet on yourself and put in the work. I hope my growth encourages others to trust their timeline and move toward what feels aligned.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Definitely not a straight line, and honestly, I’m grateful for that now. For a long time, I struggled with self-doubt, pressure to be practical, and the fear of pursuing creative work fully. I was juggling different roles and identities, and sometimes pure exhaustion made me question whether I could actually do this.
But those seasons taught me some of the most important lessons, that alignment matters more than speed. I trusted my voice, and everything shifted. My vision became clearer, and I finally allowed myself to build the artistry I wanted. I’m still learning and still growing, but now from a place of belief rather than hesitation. I guess I took The Long Way (wink wink).
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a singer, songwriter, and actor, and my work connects my love for music, film, and togetherness. I create R&B/Pop with a warm, cinematic quality: the kind of music that hopefully feels like a warm blanket on the ears. Acting lets me step into stories, and music lets me create them, they naturally influence each other.
What I’m most proud of is staying intentional with my craft. I care about honesty, and feeling, not just making something that sounds good, but something that means something.
What sets me apart is the way I approach the work: every song and visual is designed to feel like a world you can step into. More than anything, I want people not just to hear what I create, but to experience it!
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
My best advice is to approach networking with authenticity rather than strategy. I don’t think of it as “networking” but I think of it as connecting. Everyone has a story, and when you genuinely resonate with someone’s work, energy, or values, let that connection grow naturally. Also, don’t be afraid to reach out! You won’t hear back from everyone, and you might get a few nos, but the right people will respond if your message is thoughtful and intentional. The best connections happen when you show up as yourself!
