Rising Stars: Meet David Acuff of Burbank

Today we’d like to introduce you to David Acuff.

Hi David, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’ve basically lived my entire life in the wild space between creativity and chaos. Guys, I’m older than AOL and Google! I grew up as a military brat, constantly moving around, which probably explains why storytelling became the one consistent thing in my life. I was always observing people, environments, accents, strange and wonderful subcultures — all of it eventually found its way into my writing.

For years I bounced around corporate video jobs, wedding videos, dance recital videos… anything to pay the bills. Along the way I got my Master’s Degree in Directing and Editing. I eventually packed up my life and drove west to Los Angeles because apparently I enjoy making things difficult for myself.

Out in Hollywood, I landed a job as a Producer-Editor at The Walt Disney Company, which has been an incredible experience. I know all their dark secrets, haha. Seriously, buy me a Cadillac Margarita and I’ll fill you in on Disney after dark.

But writing novels was always the thing quietly luring me back. See, I believe that great stories don’t need permission to exist.

Over the years I published books in multiple genres — sci-fi, horror-comedy, semi-memoir — via my publishing shingle, BravoBay Books. Not just my books but a dozen other creatives as well who simply needed a book sherpa to help guide their stories into print. BravoBay is simply a place to experiment with story and delivery.

Most recently, I released my biggest creative undertaking yet: The Edge, a five-book sci-fi series that combines dystopian worldbuilding, action, humor, found family, class warfare, and a lot of my own experiences feeling like an outsider trying to find where I belong.

The funny thing is, after all the video production, Hollywood craziness, comedy clubs, failed YouTube empires, corporate gigs, and creative detours… I think I’ve finally become what I always wanted to be in the first place: a storyteller.

And definitely one that’s getting a little better with each book.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Yeah, no. I’ve been fired from jobs, had story after story rejected by publishers, I’ve been divorced, had cars repossessed, homes in foreclosure, bitten by a hamster and not received any superpowers from it, but who hasn’t?

Where do you think the best stories come from? They come from the blood and the sweat and the tears.

They held a Resilience Seminar at Disney for all their employees. I skipped it. I’m resilient AF Anyone whose ever owned a cat doesn’t need a resiliency course. You deal with rejection daily. You’re already an emotional 2×4. You’ve got the right stuff. Carry on.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Professionally, I work as a Producer-Editor in Hollywood, but my real passion has always been storytelling in all its forms — novels, film, comedy, trailers, marketing, even weird social media experiments that probably shouldn’t work but occasionally do.

Through BravoBay Books, I help authors take ideas from rough manuscript to finished product. That can mean editing, book design, audiobook production, trailers, marketing campaigns, or sometimes just talking an overwhelmed first-time author off the ledge. I love helping creative people actually finish things because honestly, most people never do.

As a writer, I’m probably best known for blending cinematic storytelling with humor and emotionally grounded characters. Even in my sci-fi worlds or Christmas horror-comedy stuff, the stories are about outsiders trying to find identity, purpose, or redemption. Underneath all the explosions and sarcasm and vampires, I’m weirdly sentimental.

Right now, I’m most proud of The Edge series. It’s easily the most ambitious story I’ve ever attempted — a five-book dystopian sci-fi saga released as interconnected installments. Like a season of your favorite TV show. It’s Mad Max meets Breakfast Club. Ha. Exactly.

What sets me apart is the combination of Hollywood production experience, visual instincts, marketing ideas, and genuine love for story structure. I understand both the creative side and the audience side. I’m equally fascinated by character arcs and movie trailers, emotional truth and algorithms, great prose and great hooks.

Also, I don’t really believe creativity has to stay inside one box anymore. The future belongs to the brave and adventurous storytellers who can move fluidly between mediums — books, videos, podcasts, social content, live events — and create worlds people want to live in.

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
For starters, my own daughters inspire me. They’re out there pushing forward with their own hopes and dreams and lives. Who am I to stop and give up when the next generation is plugging away like little champions. Same with the students I’ve taught in school. I can’t just sit there in Raleigh, NC and challenge them to go off to Hollywood and try to make it for themselves. I need to lead the way. Show them it’s possible. Messy, sure, but possible.

The writing community is vast as well. I’ve met many authors like Mara Purl and Dom Testa and others who have been very generous with their time and sharing their experiences as indie authors and things that have helped and hurt them along the way.
