Rising Stars: Meet Blair Perkins

Today we’d like to introduce you to Blair Perkins.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Like many artists, my journey began in the church which eventually evolved into me performing locally in many talent competitions and showcases. At 11 years old, I began performing in the live music circuit with various legendary musicians including Rickey Minor, Paul Jackson Jr. and Ricky Lawson. Eventually, I was granted the opportunity to perform with Stevie Wonder at his annual ‘House Full of Toys’ benefit concert and started a YouTube channel the night after the show to post the clip. After receiving positive feedback, I decided to start posting YouTube covers and after a year or two, I began gaining a following and landing some viral moments.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Music definitely hasn’t been a smooth ride for me and I’ve had many struggles. One of my main struggles as an artist has always been finding producers who understand me as an artist and believe in me enough to work alongside myself to create new sounds that evolve the R&B genre. In my career, I’ve always had to fight for my voice to be heard and It still happens today; however, now that I have my own company, I’m able to call the shots and create the music that I fully believe in.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m an R&B singer-songwriter that is mostly known for writing Demi Lovato’s platinum-selling single ‘Made in the USA’ and more recently releasing my debut album, Blair Perkins, in which two songs from the album were featured on the season 5 soundtrack of Showtimes original series ‘The Chi.’

What sets me apart from other artists is the fact that I’m not competing or trying to live out someone else’s vision of what success is. I’m honestly just creating the best music I possibly can that represents me as an artist with as much detail as possible.

Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
Taking a risk can be terrifying, but it’s necessary sometimes to get to where you’re trying to go. My life up to a certain point was based off of getting a record deal because I had been programmed into thinking that a major label was the only way to live my dreams, but when that day came, it wasn’t the generic success story from the 25-minute documentary specials I had been watching my entire childhood. After regaining my freedom, I decided to take the biggest risk of my life which was starting my own record label and investing into myself as an artist. It was the hardest and most expensive thing I had ever done, but I’m glad I did it because I now have this incredible record I can share with the world.
