Rising Stars: Meet Augusto Austin Ochoa

Today we’d like to introduce you to Augusto Austin Ochoa.

Augusto Austin Ochoa

Hi Augusto Austin, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I am 11 years old. I was born and raised in Los Angeles. I’m very proud of my Mexican upbringing. My older brother would always skate, and he inspired me to start my own business. The movement that we’ve been creating is to motivate people of all ethnicities to be themselves and skate together. With the help of my mother, we created a Hispanic-owned skateboarding distribution company run by an 11-year-old!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Not an easy road for sure. It has been quite a challenge. Since I am only 11 years old. I need lots of help from my mom and brothers. One of the reasons I want to start having Deza skateboards in the USA is to help my mom. She works so hard. She is my best source of help. My dad is not around. Otherwise, he will be helping me so much. He passed away when I was three. All I do is to make him proud. There are several things I don’t know about. An example is driving to stores or picking up the orders in Tijuana and bringing them to LA.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
The idea started when my mom’s friend posted his skateboards on Instagram. They are so colorful. I loved them. My mom got me 100 decks. When she saw me going into my local skatepark. Which is only a block away. She took me more seriously. All got so real when I signed up for a free store trial on Shopify. I did all I understood. Uploaded images, descriptions, and inventory. Then, going to other parks to sale the skateboards. Eventually, we went to skate shops to offer the skateboards. We have four now.

The unique characteristic of Deza Skateboards is that before it is a skateboard, the art is created, and there is an original art piece behind each deck. Some are done with ancient techniques like Xilography, Huichol yarn artwork, and mosaic.

There is various collections from different cultures and regions of Mexico that have been created and put into skateboards.

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
My biggest advice to anyone who is starting any project or business is too never be unmotivated and constantly create something new to inspire others. That’s exactly what skateboarding is about! Keep trying till you land it! It hurts, but worthy.

Ask for help, get a goal you can achieve and don’t let it go till is what you want. My mom says when you want to give up. Remember the reason why you started. Also, think on helping others and donate. Not only for profit.
