Phoebe Dawson shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Good morning Phoebe, it’s such a great way to kick off the day – I think our readers will love hearing your stories, experiences and about how you think about life and work. Let’s jump right in? What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
I like to wake up early take my dog for a walk, and have time to sit on the couch and have some coffee and set an intention for the day, then take my time to shower and do my makeup if im working, maybe listen to a good podcast. I think its important to have personal moments everyday to slow down and be present.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am a Makeup Artist based in LA, I grew up in New Zealand, went to Makeup School in Australia, then moved to LA at 19 to chase my dreams and this has been my only career and passion since I dropped out of high school!
I have always loved makeup and how when we look good we feel so much better. I do makeup for film, photoshoots, actors, athletes, musicians, personal clients, red carpet, weddings, events, commercials and more! I also do personal and group makeup lessons. I love the variety and all the people I get to meet and beautiful places I travel for work.
Doing makeup has taken me all over the USA and internationally to Italy, South Africa, Jamaica and more.
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What breaks the bonds between people—and what restores them?
I think communication, feeling heard, seen and understood is everything, and we all want that as humans and to know people truly care and are present with us and interested. I think a lack of these things or the feeling the opposite of these can break bonds, those small moments of miss-connection can really add up or not speaking up about things. Communication is everything!
What did suffering teach you that success never could?
I think in the moment suffering is horrible and really sucks but its lead me to my greatest moments of growth and deep inner healing work! Moving to the USA with nothing and no money, I did suffer, but it also motivated me so much everyday to work really hard and do what ever I could to go out and build a career, an income and get things going.
Also after some of my most painful heartbreaks and worst relationships it taught me I really wanted change, growth and to really do some deep personal work and growth.
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
I think theres always going to be challenges and changes with the entertainment industry, and the last few years there has been a LOT of changes with Ai, strikes, and major shifts in how things are done with technology rapidly changing at a faster pace, and its easy to complain or go into fear but I think you have to choose to see it as a positive, now we have amazing tools to market ourselves with social media, reach much more people, create our own opportunities. I think success is a mindset, and you have to get creative, create your own opportunities and find ways to grow and pivot with the ever changing times.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: If you knew you had 10 years left, what would you stop doing immediately?
I think I would let go of the fear and worry and stress that I sometimes have and just be more fearless and try to have more fun and joy in my life. Be more brave with my life and what I do with it!
