Joshua, we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: What is a normal day like for you right now?
A normal day for me right now is like deciding between a few inexpensive restaurants near the corner of Third Street and Catalina Boulevard for breakfast/lunch (brunch), after a long, bedridden doomscroll through Instagram.
I spend the rest of my day conditioning myself to withstand the myriad hardships that plague my life. This involves composing music, long, hot baths, and socializing at some of my favorite bars in Los Angeles.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am a multidisciplinary artist and musician whose work sits at the intersection of tradition and experimentation.
With a distinctly postmodern sensibility, I draw from established musical forms while deconstructing them through a contemporary, often genre-blurring lens.
At the heart of my practice is an exploration of expression to navigate human connection, vulnerability, and meaning-making in a fragmented world.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What relationship most shaped how you see yourself?
It would be unfair to point to an individual and credit them for ‘shaping’ my self-image.
I believe that we are all a reflection of one another, and in that mirror, we see the good, the bad, and the ugly facets of ourselves that we can refine but never truly recast.
What’s something you changed your mind about after failing hard?
After losing a residency at a well-established cocktail lounge on Sunset Boulevard, I had to face my ego and reassess why I was operating in a manner detrimental to myself and those around me.
This rejection marked the end of a long-term romantic relationship of mine and the beginning of a performance hiatus that I am still slowly getting over.
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What’s a cultural value you protect at all costs?
I hate to be self-aggrandizing, but maybe I am in the vanguard of continued authenticity.
These days, sincerity seems to be a four-letter word, with sarcasm and cynicism being the defense against having one’s feelings hurt.
With me, there is no guile.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. What will you regret not doing?
The only thing I will regret not doing is more of what I love.
