Meet Dowzy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dowzy.

Dowzy, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I played cello and drums in early grade school but I ditched music for basketball as that became all I cared about up to and through high school. In my senior year, I got inspired from a singing show to pick up a guitar and try singing some Green Day covers. This continued into early college, and my interest grew so much that I dropped out to go into music full time back in 2015. After a couple of years gigging around Boston, I decided I was either going to move to LA for more opportunity or go to Berklee College of Music for more training. I decided on the latter, figuring I was pretty lucky to be accepted, to have support from my parents, and to be so close to home at such a famous school. I sped through Berklee in two and a half years and then moved out to LA as soon as I had the money saved, which was January 2020. In the year that I’ve been done with school, I’ve begun my career as Dowzy, releasing songs online and exploring where my sound wants to go as an artist.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It definitely has not been smooth, and I think that’s true of any non-conventional path in life. Finding myself delivering pizza and living at home at 20 years old was weird, like man, I hope this leads to something good. And it did because I don’t think my spotty “Good Riddance” cover was getting me into music school fresh out of high school.

I’ve also struggled to define myself as an artist. It’s so important to set yourself apart and to find what makes you interesting or worth listening to. I started by learning to sing Ed Sheeran’s entire “+” album, and now I’m releasing hip-hop and trap bangers. I’m trusting the process though, and going through that journey is what being an artist is all about right?

Can you give our readers some background on your music?
My business is my artist persona, Dowzy. I sing, rap, write, produce, and perform. My biggest strength is my voice and my ability to come up with melodies and lyrics to pair with beats and instrumentals. I’m pretty emotional, and I let that flow into my music as much as possible. Every song I make is my new favorite, so it’s hard to say what I’m most proud of honestly. My double single from the Springtime called “night time // full moon” came out really good though if I had to pick something.

Being Dowzy is what sets me apart. There’s not much difference in me as a person from my brand, and that makes each story I tell something that someone else out there can feel for themselves.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I don’t attribute much of my life or business to luck really. I’ve always just kind of figured out what direction I want to go in, and then done it. But ask me again in five years, because I still feel like I’m so early in my career.
