Meet Yuxin Peng of SAN FRANCISCO

Today we’d like to introduce you to Yuxin Peng

Hi YUXIN, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My journey has been full of twists and turns: I grew up in a traditional rural family in China, but I never felt I fit in with my surroundings. I had a passion for movies, animation, and games, spending more time on these interests than with my family. I believe most of my self-education came from the movies I watched. Although I studied chemical engineering during my undergraduate years in China, my enthusiasm for the film industry never waned. I eagerly watched excellent films and learned the principles of film storytelling through YouTube.
After graduation, I chose to take a gap year to focus on learning the necessary knowledge for a film major. I prepared my portfolio, began writing scripts, and worked on short films for my college applications. At that time, my goal was to study film directing. Gradually, I convinced my family to support my decision to study film in the United States. This process was incredibly challenging and can be considered the most critical and difficult turning point in my life. Fortunately, I met someone very important to me during this time—my girlfriend, Xinyue Pan. She is my partner and has always supported me as we pursue our dream of becoming storytellers together.
After multiple attempts and practical considerations, I realized that my family’s financial support was limited. Therefore, I decided to choose a more practical and feasible direction: visual effects (VFX). VFX is not only an essential part of the filmmaking workflow but also allows me to achieve financial independence. I see storytelling as my ultimate goal, and learning VFX is a crucial step toward that goal. Additionally, the application of VFX in the gaming industry is extensive, providing me with more career options and development opportunities.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I believe that my decision to transition from an undergraduate major in Chemical Engineering to the field of game or film visual effects marked the beginning of a long journey of exploration and transformation. This was not just a change in career direction, but the start of my practical commitment to my new passion. During this process, I worked hard to convince my family to support my choice and provide me with basic living expenses and tuition. I began studying for the IELTS, preparing a portfolio to apply to art schools in the United States, and even went alone to the U.S. Embassy to apply for a visa. This experience taught me how to independently face challenges and strengthened my determination to pursue my dreams.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am currently focused on game visual effects, particularly those created using Unreal Engine. I am well-versed in the animation production pipeline within Unreal, including scene setup, animation creation, particle effects, and camera parameters. I also have experience using Blueprints to construct various scenes, and I am familiar with particle systems.

My strength lies in my ability to iterate and optimize my work quickly. I can rapidly acquire new skills and continually explore how AI might improve workflows. I’m already leveraging AI tools to enhance my efficiency.

As a visual effects artist, I combine the aesthetic sensibilities required for artistic roles with the problem-solving abilities necessary for technical art, including some programming skills. This unique blend allows me to bridge the gap between artists and programmers, facilitating efficient and reliable communication between the two disciplines.

Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
I am always open to collaboration and strongly believe that thorough and proactive communication before starting a project can save a lot of unnecessary time and effort. During my time working at FUNPLUS Games, I was eager to collaborate with colleagues, sharing my experience and skills to achieve common goals. I participated in internal training sessions as an instructor, where I shared insights on how AI software can enhance workflow efficiency. Additionally, I authored over 15 tutorial documents on the application of AI tools like Stable Diffusion in the art pipeline. I place great value on continuous learning and am always willing to explore new technologies with like-minded individuals.
