Meet Youtian Duan

Today we’d like to introduce you to Youtian Duan.

Youtian Duan

Hi Youtian, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’ve been good at art since I was a kid. I have a strong sense of my own emotions and other people’s feelings. I like to tell stories that connect with people, and art is just a great way to express that after a decade of art and design education. I am now an artist, designer, and co-founder of Another.World studio. I currently studying at the Harvard Graduate School of Design and hold an MFA in furniture design from the Rhode Island School of Design. My art is a vibrant tapestry weaving narrative, memory, culture, and innovation together. My creations are a playful yet profound reflection of life’s authenticity and the emotional rollercoaster we all ride. With a keen interest in the dream world, I capture the essence of the subconscious, turning it into art that speaks to the soul. Each piece by me is an invitation to an adventure, encouraging viewers to explore the complexities of self and the ever-shifting landscape of reality.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t been a smooth road; finding resources has been a major struggle, including securing workspace and financial support for materials. However, I’ve been fortunate to have the support of my peers and family, who have provided a lot of love and emotional support along the way.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
My medium is unconventional—I craft my expressions through furniture, which I consider more than just objects; they are functional sculptures embodying emotions and stories, witnessing the unfolding of lives. Furniture intimately integrates into our lives, shaping our living spaces through both sophisticated designs and simple utilities. For some, a piece of furniture might be a lifelong companion, while for others, like students far from home, these items are but fleeting companions, discarded post-graduation. Yet, even in their brief tenure, they bear witness to a phase of life, to growth and change.

My creative sparks are kindled by dreams—varied, continuous scenes that play through the nights, some recurring, others fleeting. Childhood memories of my mother’s emotional turbulence often resurface in these dreams. Once buried for nearly a decade, these memories unexpectedly revealed themselves in the fabric of my dreams, reminding me that dreams are not mere illusions of the night but reflections of my deepest self, narratives of past experiences stored away, whether readily recalled or long forgotten.

These dreamscapes infuse my art, allowing each piece of furniture I create to do more than function in the mundane. They tell a story, resonating with the universal yet deeply personal language of dreams. Common dream themes, such as examinations or searches, mirror universal psychological experiences. Through such elements, my work seeks to evoke a shared resonance, stirring memories and emotions in those who encounter it.

Furniture, in its essence, facilitates a unique dialogue: practical in use yet profoundly emotional in presence. My creations strive to capture this duality, exploring how pieces transcend their utility to become narrators of human stories. This journey is both an artistic exploration and a deep reflection on life itself. Each furniture piece is not just an object but a medium, each interaction a potential trigger for buried memories.

This is why I choose furniture as my medium—it is not merely an item of utility but a chronicler of lives, an interpreter of dreams and memories. I want the world to know that my brand, Another.World, is more than just a design studio—it’s a manifesto for creativity and personal expression. It represents the courage to explore one’s inner world and bring those visions into reality. Our work invites people to not only admire design but to feel and live it in their everyday environments. Each piece I create is open to interpretation, and I leave it to you, the viewer, to decide what it represents, hoping to provoke thought and evoke personal connections with my creations.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out.
I would say just go for it and try your best! If you are unsure, confused, lacking confidence, or anxious, just dive in and do it. The effort will reveal the answers you’re looking for.
