Today we’d like to introduce you to Yoon Ji Yang.
Yoon Ji, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My life’s journey has taken me on an incredible adventure, living in Iran, Korea, Belgium, Italy, and now settling in the United States. Each place I’ve lived has provided me with unique experiences that have shaped my perspective on the importance of communication design in connecting people around the world. It sparked a deep fascination within me, pushing me to pay attention to the intricate elements of visual communication and become even more passionate about it. Living in diverse, multicultural environments has gifted me with invaluable experiences and a genuine appreciation for the universal language of design. This passion drove me to pursue a BFA degree in Communication Design at Parsons School of Design in New York City. Throughout my studies, I’ve been able to explore various design disciplines, with a particular focus on digital design. Currently, I am working as a visual designer, and I’m excited to share my story with VoyageLA!
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Design work always comes with its fair share of challenges, given the significant importance of communication skills alongside the required technical knowledge. Throughout my journey as a Visual Designer, I’ve encountered a lot of them. Finding fresh ideas while striving to achieve a balance of simplicity, modernity, sophistication, and meaningfulness is always a challenging step for me. Also, I am constantly involved in extensive communication processes, receiving criticism, feedback and translating them into our designs. As a visual designer, I have to be multilingual, adept at both verbal and visual communication, ensuring my designs can be understood by others.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a digital designer with a strong passion for design and a particular focus on digital mediums. Currently, I am working as a Visual Designer at Homethrive, Inc., a tech-enabled healthcare service company where I am leading the rebranding of the visual identity. In the past, I have worked as a freelance designer at Media.Monks, collaborating on projects supporting Meta. Some notable projects I have been involved in include designing graphic treatments for WhatsApp’s docu-series Crossing Cultures and building ideas for Meta’s metaverse platform, Horizon World.
My portfolio and work experiences encompass a wide range of mediums, including motion, product, and interactive design. What sets me apart from others is my eagerness to explore emerging mediums and push boundaries. One example of this is my personal initiative to create a projection mapping project for installation, showcasing my interest in interactive media experiences. Additionally, I have gained valuable experience in the fashion industry, including designing for fashion garments and assisting at New York Fashion Week in 2019. I believe in exposing myself to different environments, as inspiration can be found anywhere. While I primarily identify as a visual designer for now, I don’t limit myself and embrace new opportunities.
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
To me, success is a powerful word that encompasses the feeling of accomplishment. It can manifest itself in different ways, and part of the joy lies in discovering where it comes from. There are moments when I document my completed works, and I can instinctively sense the satisfaction that comes with it. Or, sharing the design process with my team or to the public, and seeing their responses and reactions when the final product is unveiled gives me a sense of whether the design has achieved success.
Success can come in unexpected ways and take on different forms, which makes it rewarding I always work towards. It’s a continuous journey driven by my desire to keep improving and creating designs that have meaning and make a positive impact.
