Today we’d like to introduce you to Yasmin Antonio.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Yasmin. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I picked up a camera at 15 years old, sort of like a coming of age type thing instead of having a quinceañera, I was just never the dress type. My dad gifted me a camera, before then I always borrowed his. Over the years, I fine tuned my craft. I learned different methods. Analog, digital, I even learned how to develop my own film.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has been everything but a smooth road. I almost quit over a dozen times. I had my gear stolen. My life almost taken from me in a huge car accident. It’s been crazy but it’s been the only consistency in my life over 18 years. Growing up as the oldest child of a first gen Mexican American family, it has been everything but easy. Photography isn’t something tangible so ten years ago when I told my parents after my first year of college that it’s what I wanted to pursue full-time, I was met with some push back. It quickly turned from “absolutely not” to “how do we help” and solely because of that, I could never give up.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
Yasmeanuh is a nickname I go by, it’s the phonetic spelling of Yasmina; which is my first name and the first initial of my last name smashed together. It’s the name I do all my photography under, it’s like my alter ego without the alter. I specialize in high fashion and lifestyle photography. I do engagement shoots, day to day content for influencers, and editorial work. I’m most proud of my style and how true I have stayed to my work and who I am as my work is an extension of me. What sets me apart from others is that I view everything as a collaborative effort, it’s not me just shooting you for the purpose of what you sought my services after, I get to know my subject on a personal level. I don’t believe in empty energy or empty actions, I only move with purpose.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite memory from childhood is when I was four years old; my little brother was born. That’s my best friend, we knock heads and do see eye to eye but he has my back like no one else. He’s never let me quit my love for photography.
