Meet West Hollywood’s Tony Romero

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tony Romero.

Tony, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I got my start as a fixture and prop designer for Urban Outfitters in the early 2000s. From there, I made a transition into production and styling, working on their photo shoots, look books and other campaigns. In 2009, I moved to New York City where I got the chance to work on projects with some amazing brands such as Ralph Lauren, Maison Kitsuné and Levi’s to name a few.

Has it been a smooth road?
For the most part, I’ve always felt really lucky because the “next thing” has always seemed to find its way to me. As a creative, you’re always looking for something new, something fresh, and something to inspire new ideas. I feel that progressing, trying new things and taking risks is important. I’ve never been afraid to do that, and so far so good! Mediocre is never associated with a risk-taker–If you’re trying to be great at something, you definitely have to take risks.

What’s the hardest part of your job?
The most challenging part of my job is also the most rewarding part at times. I’m not big on doing the same thing twice–ever. So I think constantly thinking forward rather than re-hashing and recycling ideas can sometimes be tricky, especially when you have so many different clients you’re working with. You have to be adaptable without comprising your vision.

How do you define success?
I think as a creative, success for me has always been defined by having a platform to express myself. I find great fulfillment in the partnerships I’ve created over the years, and the different skill sets I’ve been able to share with other amazing creative-minded people. Having that platform to express myself in an artistic way, coupled with being able to create a good living for myself while doing it is kind of the dream for any creative—it’s lucky.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I’m taking a bit of a hiatus from corporate styling and creative work right now and really focusing on editorial styling and production. I started shooting and producing my own editorial content and launched my LA-based women’s e-commerce shop and clothing label, Aquelarre, this year and the feedback has been really great. I’m focusing a lot of my time partnering with the brands that’s I’m working with and creating content with them, and I’d like to start to transition a little more into one-on-one client styling consultations as well. I’m really excited for this next chapter.
