Meet Victoria Kuang

Today we’d like to introduce you to Victoria Kuang.

Hi Victoria, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I was born and raised in Boston, Massachusetts. I’m a 25-year-old, R&B singer, dancer, model, and actress. From an early age, I knew what I wanted to do in life. To entertain and make people smile with music.

I grew up singing karaoke with my friends and family for fun. The Pussycatdolls and Danity Kane will always be some of my go-to’s.. “we in the car we ride slow.” If you know, you know! I joined a Gospel choir group in elementary school that would later inspire my R&B sound now, with the influences from Usher, Alicia Keys, JoJo, Keyshia Cole, Mary J. Blige, etc. I could go on and on and on but I’ll carry on Lol.

Along with singing, I took an interest in dancing after I saw my mom’s friend Anhtrang perform in shows for Prelude New England, World of Dance, Hip Hop International, etc. She inspired me to take dance classes, to believe in and push myself more. Basically, she’s my big sister/mentor. I remember she’d help me practice steps after class with her nephew Billy. We’d go to 7eleven after class to get slurpees as a treat. I loved it. I will never forget dancing to Ryan Leslie’s “Quicksand” when I was 11 years old. Those were some of the best times of my life.

And eventually, I loved moving my body so much, my mom noticed it. She encouraged me to keep going. As shy as I was, I kept trying. It was her idea to sign me up to audition for the Boston Arts Academy high school. At that point in time I didn’t have much training. By the grace of God, I got in the school. I did Hip-Hop choreography to “Lose Control” by Missy Elliott. I pulled out some random ass breakdance moves I had barely learned or practiced the week before.

But, I knew in order to get to where I wanted to be as an artist I had to challenge myself. This was the time I had to give it my all. I left my heart on the floor. It’s been one of the best decisions I’ve made. I’m glad I did it.

Fast forward to now, in 2023… Luckily and with much hard work, I’ve been able to achieve a lot of my dreams. I recently moved to LA in mid-year of 2022 with my boyfriend Rio. I’ve recently worked in some films/tv shows including “Dave”, music videos including David Guetta’s “Damn”, commercials including brands “the SIMS”. Last but not least I’ve worked my booty cheeks off dancing for some artists I looked up to as a kid, including Lil Kim at the Lovers & Friends Festival in 2022!!!! Also Paula Deanda at the Youtube Theater.

I would like to keep the ball I got rolling and hopefully get to tour this year with my girl band JBVOA. Happy to say that I’m finally reaching a point in my life where I get to work on my own music, branch off, try new things, keep learning, being more versatile within my artistry.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
To be honest I had no idea of how I was going to be able to achieve my goals of being in a girl band, doing music videos, dancing in front of millions of people. When the time felt “right” I just did what I could. Always gave nothing less than my best.

To this day I get flashbacks sometimes about high school in Boston, MA. From 8am to roughly 6pm, I studied as a dance major – training rigorously in classical styles such as Modern, Jazz, Ballet, African, Salsa, and Contemporary. I struggled doing Ballet. I cried sometimes because I thought I’d never get it. My days were very long and strenuous. Pulled a few hamstrings, sprained an ankle, and ended up developing knee tendinitis from training so much in such a quick time. Went to Physical Therapy every week. Nothing good worth having comes easy. You gotta do what you gotta do.

I even went on to audition and join the urban dance company called Phunk Phenomenon in Boston, MA. They’ve taught me everything I know. I ended up learning old-school styles like Popping, Locking, Waacking, Voguing, Breaking, Tutting, etc. I kept taking classes at least twice a week. I had charity shows with my crew dancing to raise awareness for Sanfillipo Syndrome. I also competed at Hip Hop International, won awards at World of Dance. This was physically one of the most exhausting times of my life. But rewarding in many other aspects. It tested my willpower and my strength. I couldn’t let up. I moved to NYC when I was 18 and studied Psychology and Dance at Marymount Manhattan College. I’m still working on finishing my Bachelor’s degree.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in R&B and Hip-Hop music as both a musician and dancer/performer. I began my work after I started modeling in NYC and meeting other creatives who influenced and introduced me more into the entertainment industry scene.

I for one, love love love Heels choreography. I’m known for being very fluid in my movements and still keeping the control and technique!

I’m most proud of how I carry myself. I prefer to just do the work. Mind my own business and not say much else. Let my work speak for itself!

I think what sets me apart is that with anything I do, I care most about doing what I like. Not doing what anyone else thinks I should do.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
My advice to whomever is reading this, is this quote from one of my favorite artists Aundrea Fimbres (a former member of Danity Kane.) On an episode of Making The Band, she said, “Your natural talent can only take you so far, but you have to fight for it and want it… I do.”

I wish I knew that everything isn’t as it seems. Just follow your inner voice.
