Today we’d like to introduce you to Trinity Lewis.
Hi Trinity, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Born and raised in the hair capital of Atlanta, GA at the very tender age of 8, my passion for hair commenced. I was always so intrigued by how my Mom could braid my older brother’s hair. I’d sit right next to her for hours mimicking her techniques and braiding patterns with my doll’s head in between my legs. Growing up in the black community our hair is everything to us, especially to us women. I saw how we’d spend hours in the hair salon or at home getting our hair done. I knew then that this was something that I wanted to pursue. For years my parents forested my hopes and dreams of becoming a world-renowned hairstylist one day. Every Christmas and/or birthday, I’d received a brand new mannequin head. They’d give me a mini-speech on how I shouldn’t cut this mannequin’s hair but to my defense, they all needed haircuts and different styles. As I got older, my Dad would jokingly ask “do you still like playing with dolls’ heads”? and I’d respond, “I’m not playing; I’m practicing”! I’d literally spend all my free time sitting in my bathroom listening to the radio practicing different hairstyles that I’d either saw in the hair salon or on TV. By this time, Youtube surfaced so I’d look up tutorials on how to achieve certain looks and try to recreate them.
As time went on, this burning passion for doing hair progressed. I went off to college and started doing hair as my side hustle in school while being a full-time student-athlete. To this day, I have no idea how I even had the energy let alone the time to do hair but I did. I was always told that God will make room for your talents so that’s what he was doing.
Once I finished school, I finally enrolled at Paul Mitchell The School. It was everything I imagined and more. I flourished tremendously and even finished the program three months early. Shortly after graduating, I received my very first hairstyling position, and although I loved it there, I knew that I wanted to relocate to California one day. I told myself and God that I’d only live in Atlanta for the next three years to perfect my craft, build my clientele, and save more money.
After a year and a half of professionally doing hair, my family encouraged me to take the biggest leap of faith of my life and move to California. I did just that! Packed up my belongings and left! It’s been a very thrilling journey thus far but I wouldn’t change anything for the world. With the help of my loving and SUPER supportive family and friends, I can finally say I’m living out my dreams. I thank God daily for this gift he’s blessed me with! It’s only UP from here!
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
They say nothing in life worth having comes easy and every day I find that phrase to be more and more true. It for sure hasn’t been a smooth road but it’s been worth it. I was an assistant for about six months prior to me officially taking clients and that was extremely tough for me. I’d beat myself up because some days, I felt like I wasn’t good enough. I was working in a really fast-paced environment that I was not used to but I showed up every single day ready to perfect my craft. I found out quickly that in this industry, I’ll forever be a student. I’ll never stop learning. Trends change every day and that is still something that I’ll have to get used to. As long as I continue to put my best foot forward and perfect my craft, I’ll be unstoppable!
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Studioninetofive?
Many people ask me the meaning behind my brand name and it’s actually my birthday (9/25). Most importantly, it means that I cater to my average everyday working woman that has a 9 to 5… get it? We live in a time where it seems like everyone is a business owner/entrepreneur and that it isn’t “cool” to have a regular job. I want women to know that they can feel empowered and not so average when they receive my services! That they too can feel glamorous and confident! My specialties include but are not limited to extensions, color, and silk presses. I have mastered the flattest sew-in’s and natural-looking extensions to date.
How do you define success?
Overall to me, success is being able to create an atmosphere for my clients to feel comfortable in a while empowering women, providing for my family, and giving back to my community.
