Meet Trailblazer Arlene Galindo

Today we’d like to introduce you to Arlene Galindo.

Arlene, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My journey with Galindo Artesania began in March of 2017 after a very difficult departure from a well known retail clothing company. Losing my employment had me feeling a void in my life. I needed to find myself and reconnect with what I believed in. I took a trip to Mexico to ground myself in my roots. It was there in Mexico that I began connecting the artesania of my culture with fashion, something I’ve always had an eye for. After walking through the streets of San Cristobal de Las Casas, Chiapas I was inspired to bring our culture to the states. The beauty of the handmade pieces represents the hard work and the value of our people.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The beginning of my journey was a struggle because of it all involved money and connections. I quickly learned to budget and take advice from fellow business owners on how to manage my income, pay fair trade, inventory, and stock my own items. One very important aspect of moving forward in a small business is networking. The power of community and collaboration is key to being successful in your small business. I have joined even coordinators such as Molcajete Dominguero, a group of vendors growing together. I am a part of the Latinx community which has also helped me market myself. Supporting others in their journey is very important, I support fellow colleagues by carrying their handcrafted merchandise with mine. Chasing Camilla is a sister brand that we proudly support. There is never any envidia, we only support and lift each other.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Glamlindo Artesanía – what should we know?
Glamlindo Artesanía is known for mixing Artesanía with modern day fashion and incorporating our traditional Mexican garments into everyday wear. I have also begun to brand myself with the influence of the pieces that I carry like el Huipil, la blusita, Jalapa blusas and Tehuana embroidery. I put my heart and soul into every combination and design. I’m a one man show and loving it!

So much of the media coverage is focused on the challenges facing women today, but what about the opportunities? Do you feel there are any opportunities that women are particularly well positioned for?
The opportunities that have come my way have been immense. I have networked and connected with so many women empowerment groups like; We All Grow Latina, Latina Fest by TrendTalk, Let There be Luz, Teach it Mamas and Viva La Muxer that it has overshadowed any challenges that I might have daces as a woman and has helped me build a great support system.
