Today we’d like to introduce you to Tod Hallman
Hi Tod, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Where I started, or where I thought my career was headed, is completely different from where I ended up. I went to school for theater but quickly fell in love with dance. After many failed attempts by the theater department, at the end of my freshman year, I changed my major to dance, and from the first day of dance class, I knew I was home where I belonged. While still a dance student, the opportunity presented itself for me to join a new dance company that was forming in Pittsburgh where I went to school. Unfortunately, the only way I could join the company was to be a graduate or leave school so I jumped at the opportunity and left to join the company. After several years of hard work and many long hours, I became a principal dancer with The Extension, A Company of Dancers. It was an amazing time in my life. I had the opportunity to dance with Bill T. Jones and his late partner Arnie Zane and June Lewis, a former Martha Graham dancer. However, at the young age of 23, I was burnt out but still had plans to move to New York until I met a guy who was moving to Los Angeles, so I followed him to LA, not knowing what that dance world was like. Sadly, it was all music video work, which didn’t interest me. I was trained to be a company concert dancer. We went to class daily and then into rehearsals for our upcoming dance series. So, I decided to leave dance, not knowing what my career further would be. I bounced around in retail sales, did visual display, and eventually landed a job at a modeling agency as a booking assistant then, I landed in celebrity entertainment as a pr assistant, which led me to the world of fashion styling and from my first shoot as an assistant, I knew I had finally found something I loved as much as dance. My styling career led me to fashion show production, which was an easy transition coming from dance and theater. I also worked at IONA Magazine as the fashion editor. IONA was an amazing publication for young women of color and truly something I’m proud to have been a part of. I produced and styled the Spectrum celebrity jewelry shoots for The AGTA, American Gem Trade Association for a decade and they will always be one of my favorite clients to work with. I eventually ended up as a faculty member at FIDM, The Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising, where I taught Trends, Past, Present, and Future and Fashion Styling for two years, even winning Teacher of the Year in 2020. When we entered Covid lockdowns, I decided I didn’t want to teach remotely. So, I went back to being a full-time freelance artist. The past few years haven’t been the same since Covid. I feel things aren’t fully back to normal as many of my Pre-Covid clients aren’t around. So it’s all about new adventures and opportunities.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Has it been a smooth road? Far from it, throughout my fashion styling and producing career, there have been amazing days and opportunities, and some days when I’ve felt I can’t wait for this project to end. But all in all, it has been an amazing experience.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?

Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
I love how quickly information flows on Instagram, which is why I started my DashinglyTod_Official page. It’s a great platform that allows me to share and talk about fashion and my experience in the industry. It’s also a great way for me to keep up with brands I love as well as new emerging brands and experiences.
