Meet Supernova Speech Therapy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Supernova Speech Therapy.

Hi Supernova Speech Therapy, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Judy and Kathy first met in the University Park Estates neighborhood in East Long Beach Ca. We became fast friends with many commonalities including the same profession. Our friendship evolved from talking about our kids, our marriage, exercising together, to really deep conversations about our profession, Speech Language Pathology. We quickly discovered that we were passionate about serving People of Color within our diverse community.
We talked late nights and in between workout sessions about opening our own pediatric speech-language pathology clinic. Each talk led to research, sharing ideas, and learning about how to start a business.
In 2023, we found a small office space to sublease and we took the leap. A year later a four room office suite became available in the same building across the hall. We jumped on it and the rest is history. We have been in business since January 2023 and now have four part-time Speech Language Pathologists on staff serving the Long Beach community with us.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has been a smooth road with many learning peaks and valleys along the way. We are therapists by education and practice so learning about running a business and all that it entails has been a journey. We knew we wanted to grow the business slowly so we could manage our full-time jobs within a local school district and be present for our own families. Growth has been slow and steady. One reason why we have not had too many struggles is because we leaned on our community resources such as the City of Long Beach Small Business Association. That mentorship has helped support our development of business skills. Kathy’s husband was a wonderful resource as well in providing support to develop the brand. Additionally, we found partnerships with Help Me Grow LA to be more involved with our community outreach.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Supernova Speech Therapy is a pediatric speech-language pathology clinic. We serve children from birth to 18 years of age. Supernova Speech Therapy is vendored with Harbor Regional Center and affiliated with the City of Long Beach. We work with children with various communication needs specializing in: Speech Sound Disorders, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Language Disorder, Apraxia of Speech, Late Talkers, Augmentative-Alternative Communication, Gestalt Language Processing, Pragmatics and Parent Education. We serve children and families in English and in Spanish for our Spanish-Bilingual population.
Supernova Speech Therapy is known for providing exceptional service to our Early Intervention clients emphasizing child-led and play based therapy. In addition, we have made great connections within the community through Parent Education workshops through the City of Long Beach.
Our clinic is unique in that we serve working families providing after school/work hours and Saturday appointments. Our connection to the families in the therapy process is what sets us apart. We are truly a family-centered practice that heavily involves family participation and parent education.
We are most proud of the relationships that we build with the children and their families and the exceptional level of speech-language therapy that is provided to every client at every session.
