Meet Steve Baca of NoHo MMA in North Hollywood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Steve Baca.

Steve, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started training the martial arts after being a victim of a violent crime. I began with American Kenpo Karate in 1993 then after reaching Black Belt I began training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in 2000. I received my Black from Professor Alberto Crane in 2017. I received my 4 stripe Brown Belt in 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu from Professor Alder Hampel in 2014.

In 2003 I began training the Filipino martial art of Kali/Eskrima and in 2010 became a Guro in Serrada Eskrima. I recently became certified to teach Krav Maga under John Whitman. We are the first Krav Maga Alliance affiliate in the San Fernando Valley. I am excited to bring Krav Maga to the North Hollywood community.

After the game company I worked for decide to move to Silicone Valley in 2004 I decided to open up my first school in Sherman Oaks. We eventually settled in North Hollywood.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Teaching martial arts is a passion of mine. Sharing what I know with others and helping them reach their goals is amazing. Everyone knows teaching martial arts won’t make you rich. I’m grateful I can do what I love and earn a living while doing it!

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about NoHo MMA – what should we know?
Training and teaching for close to 25 years. I’ve been lucky to have trained with some of the best martial artists in the world. it’s an honor to share what they have taught me. We have probably one of the most eclectic programs in the East San Fernando Valley.

We offer:
Krav Maga
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu
Submission Grappling
Serrada Eskrima
LAMECO Eskrima
FCS Kali
Kickboxing

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I think I connect with my students. I teach and show them a pathway. My students come from all walks of life and I want the hobbiest to have the same experience as our competitors. We are a family and everyone should feel welcome and I hope my energy conveys that!
