Today we’d like to introduce you to Stephanie Entin.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I am a self-taught photographer and I picked up my first camera, a film camera, that I borrowed from my dad, at age 13 when I traveled to Europe on a school trip. I was inspired to do photography by this experience and was on the yearbook staff as the sports editor and photographer in high school.

My life took other twists and turns and I became a dietitian and eventually moved to Los Angeles to pursue an acting and modeling career. I have always admired the photographers and DP’s, with loads of curiosity about the process all the while being on the other side of the camera. When my first daughter was born, I got my own camera and learned the basics from our good friend who is a wedding photographer. My life took more twists and turns that caused me to recreate my life.

Out of this, I decided to turn my passion for photography into a profession. I chose to start out doing birth photography because I love raw and real and documentary style photography and I am an experienced birth doula. And this is how Little Plum Photography was born. I attend births as the photographer and sometimes as both a doula and birth photographer.

I now offer birth photography and videography, maternity and newborn sessions, family photography. I sometimes document events, like first birthday parties and small, intimate weddings and bar and bat mitzvahs. My focus is to capture authenticity and emotion as it happens in the moment.

Please tell us about your art.
I make photographs, images that convey the emotion and authenticity of that moment in time. I do digital photography and mostly edit in Lightroom.

I love to utilize natural light or available light without a flash. Birth photography is particularly challenging because often times I have no idea what the conditions are that I’m walking into. It’s documentary and I often I am shooting in low light. My goal with birth photography for my clients is to tell the story of the day their baby was born. So, it is very raw, real, intimate and full of emotion and sometimes intensity. For other types of photography, I often shoot on location in my client’s homes or we go somewhere like the beach or a garden or find a nice hidden trail in a canyon.

I do photography because it’s what I’m passionate about and it excites me. I could sit and look at images all day, especially the ones that have feeling and emotion or are interesting or different in some way. I love to be able to capture these important moments for people so they have them to keep for a lifetime. I think in my artwork you can find honesty.

Choosing a creative or artistic path comes with many financial challenges. Any advice for those struggling to focus on their artwork due to financial concerns?
Do whatever it takes to do what you love. If it means taking on another job that pays the bills while it allows you to pursue the other, then go for it. I definitely think the financial fear and challenges of pursuing something that you love that is creative, something that is your own business, are very real.

Once you become more established and make connections and clients start hiring you again and again, it’s a wonderful feeling and you take yourself to a more comfortable place financially and in your confidence. You just have to work through the uncertainty of it all and keep going and remember why you began in the first place. Never lose sight the reason you started your art or your business.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
You can view my work on my website, and of course, Instagram and Facebook. I utilize social media to reach people and connect with potential clients and also peers. I love the photography community and have found a few invaluable groups, mostly women, where we learn and grow from sharing with each other.

I received an honorable mention award in the International Birth Photographer’s Association for 2017. My images have been featured on Dear Photographer, Birth Becomes Her and Looks Like Film. I would love the opportunity to showcase birth photography as an exhibition in a gallery or local photography museum, either just my own or as a collection of other birth photographers. People can support my work by following me on Instagram and sharing the images and the beauty of childhood and birth.
