Today we’d like to introduce you to Soon Chon.
Soon, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Always had a passion for the fashion industry. With pure love for the arts and creating something out of nothing. At the age of 15, started designing and creating my own hats with scraps of fabric, pins, buttons, etc. Anything that was different. I would take my creations and walk up and down the famous street of Melrose and ask shop owners if they would like to buy my hats to sell in their stores. Since then, I have worked in the industry for years (especially in the hat wholesale industry) I have paid my dues, worked my way from the bottom and learned every bit of knowledge along my journey. Now my dream has come true and it is my time to provide to the world what has been missing in this game. Our motto has always been “Think different, see different, and be different” …because different is beautiful.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
There are always going to be obstacles and you will be challenged every day, but I have learned that it is how you treat those obstacles & challenges that will ultimately determine the success of your business. I have a beautiful & creative wife (Tessa) who happens to be Head Case LA’s main designer. We also have our 2 beautiful children, Remington (4), Kyrie (2). Although we feel beyond blessed, one of the main struggles we face is against time. It takes a lot of precise time to create designs, fabric hunt, coordinate our hats, process orders, etc. It has been very hard to be able to do our work, have time with our kids, and also to be able to connect and have husband & wife time as well. At the end of the day, family always comes first, and making sure you build a system, schedule correctly, and organize everything is key.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
Head Case LA is a brand, a movement, a lifestyle, and a dream come true. It is a place where hats designed with heart and soul live. We are a company who truly thrive on seeing our customers happy.
We are skilled and peculiar individuals for skilled and peculiar individuals. We are for those who have embraced not fitting in and have brought being different to the status-quo. That is why our motto is “think different, see different, be different.”
We do not follow trends, we make them. Vandalize the norm!
We specialize in creating hats, creating designs, and we also do all forms of customization.
I think what makes us proud so far is people from all forms of life showing us love & support. This motivates us even more & shows us that we are doing something right.
What were you like growing up?
I was a very shy kid growing up. I usually kept to myself and did not talk much. I really focused on my studies as a youth. I loved playing ball, on the court is where I made a lot of my very first friends and enabled me to break out of my shell a bit. My dad used to be a DJ in Korea in his college years, so music has always been in my life from the day I was born. Queen, The Eagles, The Doors, Beatles, Michael Jackson, and so much more classics as we call them now were always played in our household.
I really got into fashion in Junior high. I was a quiet and shy kid, so being able to express myself through my fashion was a great feeling. I had like the biggest imagination when I was a kid. I mean all my friends at one point were imaginary lol. I really liked reading books at a young age as well. I believe having such a big imagination made me more creative in a way.
