Meet Seika Simon of SCS Hair in Stevenson Ranch

Today we’d like to introduce you to Seika Simon.

Seika, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I grew up in the Santa Clarita Valley as a ballerina. After fifteen years of dancing, I developed quite an affinity for hair and makeup for the stage. Nearing the end of my dance career, I decided to pursue my interest in hair and makeup from behind the salon chair.

Shortly after graduating beauty school, my apprenticeship began in Valencia, CA under the supervision of Tony Parks, former Creative Director for Vidal Sassoon of Santa Monica.

While pursuing my career in the salon, I have expanded my craft into the motion picture industry, working on film and television sets, commercials, and red carpet events.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
As with any clientele based career, the biggest challenge is building a great and loyal clientele. After graduating beauty school, I immediately went to work in salon where I had to start at the bottom before doing any hair! I swept floors, washed towels, and held foils all day. I felt very frustrated and undervalued, but looking back at it now, I wouldn’t have changed a thing. I learned a lot by just watching and listening to the professionals around me, and that has helped shaped me into the successful hair stylist I am today. After that experience, I did a stint at Supercuts where I was thrown into the deep end… my haircuts were timed and I wasn’t allowed to deny any customer, except those with lice (which was, unfortunately, a real and often thing). Finally deciding to go out on my own, I contacted the hair stylist that did my hair as a teenager, she gave me my start and allowed me to rent a chair at her salon on a daily rate. About a year later, a new owner took over and I was forced to finally rent on a weekly basis. I then slowly, but surely built up my clientele in a little less than 2 years. I was very lucky to have done so well for myself at Supercuts that a lot of my clients actually followed me! I hopped around to a couple salons before finally ending up in the wealthy LA suburb of Stevenson Ranch, where my SCS Hair began to, and continues to thrive.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
As a successful hair stylist, I am most proud of being known for my professionalism, integrity, and creativity. I have, and will continue to stay up to date on current trends and techniques, ranging from Balayage, Unicorn Tribe hair, and the popular men’s barbering. I take great pride in the respect I have for my business as well as for my clients. I strongly believe in forming realistic and respectful relationships with each one of my clients, this is what sets me apart from others. I appreciate every single individual who has contributed to my success. The loyalty and love that goes into nurturing and maintaining those relationships is what gets me out of bed in the morning. My number one priority is making people feel good about themselves, I just happen to do it by making them look great too!

What were you like growing up?
I am an only child. I started ballet at the age of 3. I was pigeon-toed as a child. When my parents took me to the doctor, he prescribed ballet as the solution. Even at a young age, I was always the stand out student – in ballet class, as well as grade school. I was known as the social butterfly and pretty much couldn’t keep my butt in my chair or my mouth shut! My mom was 39 when she had me, and my dad not far off in age, I always felt having older parents has been the key to who I am as a person. I was always labeled as the old soul, I always connected better with adults and older kids rather than with children my own age. My maturity was always noticed and praised by teachers and classmates’ parents, thus making it very easy for me to thrive in any environment. I was always extremely opinionated and never had any qualms about what I said and where I said it. My mouth definitely got me into trouble, and early on, I learned the valuable lesson of having to take the time to think before I speak. By the time I graduated high school, I was voted “Most Opinionated” by my peers. A personality trait that has always stuck with me, but has definitely been refined over the years.

Growing up on stage, taking direction and remembering choreography also contributed to my strong personality. I always hear about “Only Child Syndrome,” where a child has to constantly be entertained by their exhausted parents or always have playmates around. I was the exact opposite! I loved my alone time, I was always able to entertain myself with Barbies, books, and I loved arts and crafts. I have always been a strong, independent, and creative individual, and I think it has served me well.
