Meet Raquel Mastrangelo of My Moxie Studio in Culver City

Today we’d like to introduce you to Raquel Mastrangelo.

Raquel, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My interest in digital branding started early on. I enjoyed watching my dad create logos and marketing materials for companies by hand before graphic design was created with computers. I found that I noticed certain products and services with exceptional design created strong brand recognition and loyalty. I became more and more interested in the experience of product development from a marketing standpoint and creating a cohesive message of a brand.

I started taking some basic design classes at night after work and on the weekends and decided to complete my bachelor’s degree in Fashion Merchandising. I completed classes such as strategies for fashion consumers, product development, trend forecasting, management, retail fashion buying, literary journalism, business ethics and computer applications for design. I also studied abroad in Italy and learned about global sourcing and international retail and brands which was an incredible experience. During my time in school, I ran my own e-commerce clothing boutique promoting and marketing it through social media. I also attended lots of networking events and seminars on nights and weekends learning about social media and how to grow a profitable business online.

During my last semester of school, the COVID-19 pandemic progressed, and in-person classes came to screeching halt. I was scheduled to start an internship the following summer but all were canceled. Companies were laying off people every day and there was so much uncertainty. It was a very difficult time for everyone in my graduating class and I realized that we were going to be living a new normal predominantly utilizing online and virtual contact for the foreseeable future. While finishing final exams and classes, I continued to learn new trends in social media, video editing, and photography. I had people reaching out to me to help them with their social media, digital branding and marketing needs and worked on projects for various brands doing content creation.

In the summer of 2020, I graduated Magna Cum Laude with my bachelor’s degree in Family and Consumer Science, Fashion Merchandising and started my business, My Moxie Studio.

Has it been a smooth road?
It certainly hasn’t been a smooth road. From the start of the pandemic, I had a lot of questions and felt uncertainty. We were ending an era of in-personal connection and entering a new way to work and communicate in this new normal. I had to self-teach a lot of skills (thank you Youtube) and there was a lot of trial and error, but each day was a fresh start to choose to be positive and commit to my success for My Moxie Studio. During this time, I locked arms with entrepreneurial women in the industry and we collaborated on different projects together by networking virtually.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
My Moxie Studio is a digital branding company that helps businesses stand out through captivating branded content and social media. I create branding packages and offer social media management services, copywriting services as well as content creation through photography and film media for my clients.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I think our city is a great place for businesses like mine. I am surrounded by an abundance of people who are in creative fields looking to reach a wider audience on social media and need help creating the look and feel of their brand. There are so many beautiful places to create content and having palm trees and street art as your backdrop never gets old.
