Meet Ramanpreet Kaur

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ramanpreet Kaur.

Hi Ramanpreet, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I emigrated to the US in at the age of 15. I always had a little passion towards art and loved getting my mehndi (henna) done back home in India. One of the days, my cousin brought henna cone and wanted me to do her mehndi. After that, I would always do my own henna by getting henna cones from the local Indian store. However, I wanted to get something more natural since store-bought henna contains a lot of chemicals. I started researching henna recipes and bought organic henna powder and made all-natural paste. I still remember how disappointed I was the first time since I could not get the paste right. After doing further research, I made improvements and I achieved the darkest stain of henna I ever had.

After that little proud moment, I started doing henna on few of my friends and family whenever they needed. With a little push from my friends, I decided to start my own business in March 2022. I always enjoyed doing henna but never thought I would do it professionally, especially on a bride. My future goal is to become a physician but doing henna gave me a great opportunity to not only connect with people but also finding a therapeutic activity that would help me balance and become a refuge on stressful days. Since it gave such a positive impact in my life, even when I become a physician, I would still love to do henna and grow more. I thank everyone for the support and for trusting me to be part of their special days and I am excited to meet and connect with new people in the future and see what the future holds for me!!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
In the beginning, it was a bit struggle. I knew I had a large scope of improvement and making sure I was providing quality service. With a lot of practice and guidance from local henna artists, I got better. I still have a goal to draw the figures more intricately, and I will definitely keep on practicing. After all, we all know that practice makes progress. In terms of art, nothing is perfect. There is always room of improvement.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I work as a Mehndi artist, also known as a henna artist. I provide services in both bridal and guest henna. I work with all the age groups and since I use organic henna, it is safe for children. It is extremely significant for me to provide the safe and quality service. I love connecting with people so working with multiple clients gives me a great opportunity. My specialty is drawing figures (portraits) of the bride and groom or the family, mostly for the bride’s henna.

On skill level, I am proud of being able to draw portraits in henna since it requires quite a skill and precision. I do have a little background in art since I paint, so it definitely helped a lot.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
One of my most favorite childhood memories was going to the salon with my mother, where she was doing a beautician course. I vividly remember her doing henna on me for practice. She would always draw henna designs on a drawing pad. I think watching her definitely grew a curiosity in me, leading me to do henna myself.
