Meet Paul Krumpe of Paul Krumpe Soccer Academy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Paul Krumpe.

Hi Paul, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I am a local product of Torrance Schools. I walked onto the UCLA Soccer team in 1981 and became a 4 year starter. I was a team captain when we won UCLA’s first NCAA Championship in 1985. I was drafted by the Chicago Sting Major Indoor Soccer League team in 1986, played on the US Pan American team in 1987, the US Olympic team in 1988 and the US World Cup Team in 1990. I retired from pro soccer in 1991 and became a Math teacher and coach at my Alma Mater, West Torrance High School from 1991-1995. I landed an assistant coaching slot on the UCLA Men’s Soccer Team from 1995-1997, where we once again won an NCAA title in 1997. I then landed the Head Coaching position at Loyola Marymount University for the next 25 seasons from 1998-2023. During all those college coaching years, I established the Paul Krumpe Soccer Academy (PKSA) and have been running summer camps and weekly training for the past 30 years in the South Bay.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
My most difficult times at LMU where I was the head coach, was losing two young men during my tenure there. David Kucera and Alex Lam were two amazing young men I was able to work with and their lives were cut short during their college years. Very difficult for me to work through their loss personally, and help their teammates continue on without them. I know all of us still think of them regularly…

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
We train young soccer players to be better soccer players and also try to help them be better people by setting examples for them of how to interact with others. We have an excellent ratio of campers to coaches ratio at our camps, and provide positive feedback and individual attention to each of them. The camps have been voted the favorite camps in the South Bay for the past several years, and we do very little advertising. Like all good brands, info about PKSA spreads mostly by word of mouth from one family to the next…

How do you think about luck?
I started PKSA in 1996 and had only been coached by a handful of coaches who had actually played soccer at a club level or higher. Really, the late nineties was just at the start of the wave of momentum that soccer was starting to build in America. We have seen how the sport has grown steadily here in the states. I love that now there are so many coaches giving back to the sport after they have played at the collegiate level, and that is why the level of the sport is so much better at the international level now. PKSA started right as that wave was building…
