Today we’d like to introduce you to Kyle Ellis.
Kyle, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Having a background in graphic design, photography seemed like the natural “next step” in my growth as an artist. What started out as a hobby, in college, has luckily turned into a career that has allowed me to work with some amazing people while giving me an outlet for what floats around in my head.
Has it been a smooth road?
For me, the biggest struggle was figuring out my overall style. My design aesthetic has always been “simple and clean”, so implementing that into my photography took a little while. There’s a fine line between being artfully minimalistic and boring. Thankfully, through practice, my balance has gotten better.
Tell us about your childhood, what were you like growing up?
Growing up, there weren’t a lot of kids in my neighborhood, so I had to learn how to become comfortable with doing things on my own. Thankfully, there was always a fun project, or some other creative activity, that I could do to help occupy my time. I’ve also always been into sports, video games and professional wrestling. The lasting impact they have had on my life, and career, are some of the best aspects of what I get to do.
What is your favorite childhood memory?
One of the fondest memories I have, from childhood, is playing checkers with my elderly neighbor Ms, Margaret. Nearly every day, after playing for an hour or so, I would peruse her collection of porcelain figurines while trying to convince her to let me have one more peppermint. What sticks out most in my mind was how she was always welcoming and willing to sit down with me and play a few a games, regardless of how she felt that particular day.
So, what should we be on the lookout for, what’s next in store for you?
Currently, my plans are to continue to build my sports and fashion portfolios while also focusing on more studio work. I’m really looking forward to seeing where all of that goes. Aside from those things, I’m also looking forward to my trip to Japan, in September, and to seeing what influences that brings along with it.
