Today we’d like to introduce you to Pamela Hirsch.
Hi Pamela, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I am the founder of Baby Quest Foundation, a non-profit charity awarding grants for procedures such as egg freezing, embryo donation, in vitro fertilization (ivf) and gestational surrogacy. Since March 2012, Baby Quest has awarded grants totaling over $2.5 million in cash and cash equivalents (medications, waived legal fees, doctor discounts). We are proud to have helped produce 135 babies, most of whom would not have been born without our financial help.
After witnessing our daughter’s long battle with infertility, I realized that many options for assisted reproduction are not covered by insurance, thus, making it difficult for many to pursue parenthood. Baby Quest strives to provide hope to those battling infertility by alleviating the financial burden that is often insurmountable.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The obstacles of running a non-profit are many The challenges have been even more intense the past two years with a pandemic and a downturn in our economy. Baby Quest depends on donations to maintain our grant program. We also are funded by businesses that establish grants in their name to assist recipients that we select.
It is important that we open the dialogue about infertility….a topic that is often relegated to silence because of the stigma of embarrassment. By bringing awareness to the issue, we can demonstrate that the one in eight who are struggling with infertility are not alone in their battle.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Twice yearly, Baby Quest selects recipients to receive grants, enabling them to pursue parenthood. The most recent deadline was September 7th with 10 grant recipients recently selected. Their stories are now appearing on social media. Two are from southern California. The next grant deadline will be March 15, 2023. We hope that those interested will follow us on our website and social media.
Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
Since much of my day is spent working on fertility-related issues, I like to stay current with podcasts relating to women’s health issues. For relaxation, I love professional sports and enjoy podcasts about the NBA and NFL, and I enjoy reading current fiction new releases.
