Meet NoHo Photographer: Erin Calvillo

Today we’d like to introduce you to Erin Calvillo.

Erin, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I am actually starting my career, I wanted to do a career where I could be as creative as I wanted- and dye my hair any color I wanted. During High School, I had no idea what I wanted to do or what I even liked. I then took an elective, which happened to be photography and my teacher made the subject fun and interesting. From there I began doing everything in my power to create visions that were inside my head and make the kind of photographs that I produce now. I came to The Art Institute of California – Hollywood and since then I have done nothing but put my head down and strive for the best portfolio and work I could produce and make myself happy.

Has it been a smooth road?
My road hasn’t been smooth at all. I have had many fair share of doubts and constantly second guessing myself on whether I was cut out for this job or not. Photography is a competitive field in my opinion and I love it and hate it at the same time. My teachers are never that easy on me and I appreciate it because, in the long run, I know it is going to help my photography and push me to create even better work, but there are times where I can’t listen to them because sometimes they lead me in a direction opposite in what I want to strive for.

Have you ever felt like giving up?
There have been moments when I felt like I was doing something wrong, that what I was doing was the wrong choice for me. I remember talking to my best friend all the time about if I chose the right path for me and if what I was doing was the right thing. We would always be so unsure of ourselves since we were straight out of high school college kids. Sometimes I wished I took a year off of school, but there were also times where I was glad I didn’t because of early graduation as well as all the cool amazing friends that I was able to meet. My endeavors are still starting for me and there are going to be tough moments, but with friends who have my back and being surrounded by other artists can always place be back on track when the going gets tough.

Let’s change gears – is there any advice you’d like to give?
I have to say don’t be afraid to take things at your own pace. Do what is comfortable for you or else you might end up miserable. Everyone works, acts and thinks differently, so don’t be afraid to do you; as cheesy as that sounds.

What are you most excited about these days?
I’m excited for the people I will meet, the places I might go and the things I will create. I can’t wait for the day that I can stand beside myself and just be like “Fuck yes! I did it! ”
