Today we’d like to introduce you to Nidah Barber-Raymond.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I received a chemical peel ten years ago. Because the results were so immediate and amazing, I decided it was what I wanted to do. I loved creating change in people’s skin. I started researching chemicals and ingredients almost immediately. I was performing Chemical peels on myself as well as my neighbors, family and friends. I even approached strangers who I thought I could help in grocery stores and elevators. Some appreciated it and some didn’t. I started out of a space in Santa Monica after I became licensed.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It’s interesting because when I became an aesthetician, I was told by my teachers and colleagues that the hardest part of being an esthetician was building a clientele. I don’t remember ever having this issue. I was working on people for free and meeting their budgets in the beginning. I loved making a difference because what I was doing was truly life-changing for them. I know people use that phrase a lot but it really is life-changing to go from a face full of acne or hyperpigmentation and wrinkles to a smooth and even complexion in a relatively short period of time.
I would say my biggest challenge was and is the balance between work and raising my children. My kids are two and six years old and I try to maintain a balance. During the Pandemic, I changed my business model to shipping home peels which has exploded my business. An unexpected surprise during a very chaotic and scary time. Perspective has been EVERYTHING.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
I specialize in chemical peels. It is all I’ve ever done. I have always believed it’s important to excel in one thing. I am proud of the fact that when I am asked if I do facials or any other service that my answer is no. I love being great at one thing.
What sets me apart from others is my knowledge and expertise over the last decade. I have learned so much and have documented so many client cases and results. By being involved with my clients after their peels, I have been able to collect data that has helped my chemists and I in the formulation process of my peels. My hands-on involved approach has been invaluable.
What were you like growing up?
I’ve definitely been a highly energetic person my whole life. Especially growing up except now, I am definitely more organized and focused. As I get older, I realize introspection is important and essential for growth. The older I get, the more I want to evolve and be better in every way. Also, caring comes naturally to me. There is a nurturing quality to my personality that I’ve always had. I want to see people happy.
