Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicole Sadighpour Nourian.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
When I was in the 5th grade, I transitioned to a new private school that was much more rigorous than the previous school I had attended. My parents noticed the difference in academics and didn’t want me to fall behind, so they hired a private tutor for me. The one on one attention I received from my tutors allowed me to not only keep up with my new education, but to quickly flourish and exceed in my class. I truly connected with my tutors, who, with their guidance, enabled me to exceed in school.
Soon enough, I began tutoring younger cousins, family friends, and students in my neighborhood. I was able to retain their attention by being energetic, loving, and by truly believing in their success. When I began my college education at UCLA I continued to tutor students. I became the “popular tutor” and by word of mouth, I was tutoring 10-15 students a week. I watched as my students who were getting C’s quickly transitioned to getting B’s then A’s; I really instilled confidence and determination in each of them.
I started my own tutoring company a bit later very organically because I did not have the time to solely tutor each person myself. I began hiring specialists for science, math, and reading for every grade, as well as SAT and ACT specialists, and started a college counseling department thereafter.
Has it been a smooth road?
Being an entrepreneur and educator is extremely rewarding, but definitely comes with obstacles. I am lucky that I was able to begin and grow my business in a truly organic manner. I started the company 10 years ago, and we’ve quickly grown throughout Los Angeles.
When I got hired to home school Chris Rock’s two daughters, I had just finished taking my LSAT for law school and got recently accepted into law school as well. When I went to my law school orientation, I did not connect to being a lawyer nearly as much as I did with home schooling these two girls and tutoring my other students; I couldn’t think of getting out of bed and looking at contracts all day. Although it sounds cheesy, being with students truly made me smile and feel good; I loved seeing the difference I was making for students. I put law school on hold while I taught, and slowly Brighter Minds Tutoring grew. I knew this was what I was born to do.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Brighter Minds Tutoring – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Brighter Minds Tutoring is a very unique tutoring company. I handpick all the tutors myself. Each tutor focuses and specializes on different children’s personalities and unique learning styles. I am most proud of the dedication my tutors put into each individual family.; as tutors in someone’s home, we become part of families. For instance, I started tutoring a student named Rylee when she was in 2nd grade and continued to send her tutors to her throughout middle school and high school, and for her SAT. We still keep in touch as if she’s my little sister. Together, we focused on her dream of becoming an architect, and now she’s currently in college studying architecture. It’s so amazing to see my kids grow.
Just this past week I’ve received over fifty emails from families thanking me for the work I’ve done this year. As part of the Brighter Minds Tutoring family, parents and students alike receive 5-star service. I’m available to help and answer questions around the clock; parents can text or call me the day-of and I can have a tutor at their home almost instantly. We work with the student’s individual teachers and counselors daily to provide tutoring for exactly what they need. Currently, Brighter Minds Tutoring is the main tutoring company for over 15 schools in West LA.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love the outdoors. Just a 15-minute car ride to the beach and I’m in my happy place. My girl friends and I have a weekly Tuesday evening dates by the beach and it just makes me appreciate every aspect of our city. I love to hike as well. On Saturday mornings, I go to Temescal Canyon and it just feels like I am so far from the hustle and bustle of the traffic. I also love dancing, it’s my form of meditation. Many people wouldn’t know this, but every single night Santa Monica offers a different Salsa dancing nights. LA has so much to offer you just have to be willing to explore outside of your comfort zones. My husband and I also love trying new restaurants. We are also expecting a baby boy in just a few weeks so I’m excited to discover a different side of the city as a new mother.
