Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicole Carmody.
Nicole, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I pursued a creative and artistic career because it feels like the path life naturally led me to. Creating art and designs has come naturally to me since I was four years old. Throughout grade school, I was always doodling and filling notebooks with drawings. I struggled academically at times, but art became my escape and a way to express myself.
In my early twenties, I had a difficult time figuring out what direction I wanted to take in life. I took college classes, changed majors, and worked various retail jobs, but I ultimately didn’t complete my degree. During that time, I experienced tragic life events that forced me to step back and realize that my life would never follow a traditional or “normal” path.
In 2018, I spontaneously created the Nicole Carmody Art & Design Instagram account, without knowing where it would lead. Soon after, people in Los Angeles and Hollywood began reaching out and inviting me to showcase my work at their events. While continuing to create and grow as an artist, I also worked as a swim instructor at the YMCA. It was a fun and rewarding experience, but when COVID happened, I was forced to step away from that job.
Even then, I didn’t stop creating. I continued making art, taking commissions, and building connections within the art community. In 2024, my creative career began gaining significant recognition. The Gallery of Hermosa has featured my work in every group art show since May 2024, and in November 2024 I opened my shop, Evil Eye Design Inc, located at Crafted at the Port of Los Angeles.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Honestly it hasn’t been a smooth road to where I am at today. A lot of people in my past would keep telling me I would never pursue my art career. Yet here I am achieving one goal at a time.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
At the intersection of abstract expressionism and modern pop art, I create vibrant, multi-layered works that refuse to be categorized. My process blends the tactile nature of acrylic on canvas with the sharp precision of digital illustration, resulting in a signature style defined by bold, saturated palettes. Whether it’s a hand-painted original or a curated lifestyle piece like our custom tote bags and apparel, my work is designed to stand out. We don’t just sell art; we invite you into the process through our immersive paint workshops and mobile parties, proving that creativity has no boundaries.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
I believe in the power of community. I’ve intentionally surrounded myself with a network of small business owners who share my passion and believe in the impact of my work. This circle of peer support, combined with an active and engaged Instagram community, has been the cornerstone of my marketing and networking efforts, allowing me to connect with clients and collaborators authentically.
