Today we’d like to introduce you to Naomi Drucker.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I had a baby at 21 and was deeply inspired to serve women in birth- the need for compassionate, respectful care was glaringly apparent. I spent 20 years building my skill set, earning degrees and credentials, building relationships with interdisciplinary colleagues, laying the foundation for my career as a midwife. I’ve been in practice now for 8 years and have the only hybrid home/hospital birth midwifery practice in the city. I wish there were more as there is a great need but I am very proud to have started such a special practice and kept it going in spite of the challenges to midwifery practice.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has been a slow and steady road. The challenges were nothing compared to what women endure in childbirth.
Financial
Barriers to working within the hospital system
Acceptance by the medical community (decision makers at every hospital).
Myths and limited/ erroneous general knowledge about midwifery
We’ve been impressed with Los Angeles Midwives, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
As a small private practice full scope midwifery service, I provide comprehensive care to women seeking annual exams and pregnancy care. For low risk pregnant clients I am the primary provider and able to offer all of the standard care available in traditional care with an OB MD and complement it with hour long visits, time and focus spent on nutrition, digestion, mental health, physical comfort, preparation for each step of pregnancy, birth, postpartum and newborn care.
Uniquely I am able and happy to offer services both in the home and in the hospital depending on my clients preferences
I have spent the past 26 years learning, training, developing connections and relationships with colleagues and specialists in order to be able to serve my clients with the utmost ease, comfort, and attention to detail. I gladly refer to trusted colleagues when my clients need something outside of my own area of expertise.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Reach out personally and if you use an email template, try to personalize it for each person.
Offer to bring them lunch or meet for coffee.
Not everyone has a job to offer but most people have wisdom to share. Take what you can get and be clear about what you want from the mentor so they can be clear about their ability to meet your needs or not.
