Meet Nancy Crowd of Silent Crowd

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nancy Crowd.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Nancy. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I’m sort of an avid reader, but the name “Silent Crowd” was derived from this thing I do while reading. While reading, I write down pop-out words. A pop-out word is just a word that stands out and leaves an impression. In one of my lists, “Silent Crowd” just spoke to me. Interestingly, I was reading the Bible and so I like to say “Silent Crowd” was gifted to me from the heavens. Love is my religion and I think it’s important to be well versed in many cultures and that’s where the logo comes in. I’m what you call a deep thinker and to me, it’s very important to feel connected to people and just the world in general. The logo is a stylized character that means power in Japanese, strength in Chinese, and Luck and Life in Hebrew. I’ve been told it looks like an upside down four and or the number 17. To be honest, it can be whatever you want it to be. My whole purpose in creating this logo was to bring the people together, you know, the “Silent Crowd.” It doesn’t matter what background you come from, the color of your skin, or what religion you practice.

We’re all human and we are connected. I think it’s cool that despite our differences, we can always connect. So it’s like if Silent Crowd means this to me and it means something else to you, we still share a commonality. Whether it be the love of the brand or the symbol. You learn things from other people, and if you are of Japanese culture and meet someone who is of Chinese culture, you now know that the symbol means two things. That was my vision, to provide a platform to start a conversation. To create a network of art geeks and lovers of music and cool things. I’ve had this concept since the seventh grade and just went with it. I never imagined that I was going to grow up to be a clothing designer. I’m just a passionate woman who expresses herself in different mediums of art and now I’m here. Besides making clothes…I also film and direct music videos, write poetry and draw graphics for other artists. So yes I have a business, but I also create in many forms. I think art is the highest expression of oneself and I want to share my emotions with the world through any medium.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Has it been a smooth road? That’s a good question. The answer is, no. I’m never where I want to be, but I’m blessed and I’m grateful. I’ve been put down and told I’m worthless and my ideas are illogical and unobtainable. I’ve even had people try to define who I am and tell me what I should stand for. I’ve had to fight for a lot of things and I’ve been told “no” so many times that I can’t even count them. I’ve heard “no” trying to get my brand in stores and I’ve had ideas and concepts stolen. I’ve watched things I came up with turn into fruitful businesses. It’s hurtful, and with these experiences lessons are learned.

However, the most important thing I’ve learned besides being grateful, is that you can’t harbor hate and you must always be open to play and discovery. I’ve met a lot of different people and that’s helped me understand how to connect to something deep inside of me which allows me to create and think at a very high level. There’s really no destination and everything is all about the journey. I don’t know where I’ll end up, but I’m striving and I’m focused. I understand that I’ve accomplished a lot, but I still have very far to go.

Silent Crowd – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Silent Crowd is a clothing company and space for artists to connect. I threw a few concerts back in the day under Silent Crowd and I still film music videos for artists and make their clothes for upcoming tours, but I mostly like to call the brand a conversation point. My top sellers include headwear and t-shirts. I started to realize the brand was popular when I saw strangers walking down the street in my clothes. Then a bunch of artists and people from the music industry started to reach out to me to work on projects. One thing I’m super proud of was when I’d buy water filters from a portion of the Silent Crowd sales and train people on how to use them. We’d team up with USC medical students and when they’d go on their medical missions, we’d have them teach underserved communities how to clean their water with our water filters. Sometimes I get invited to speak to classrooms ranging from middle school students to college students and I feel good giving back to the community in that way. To me, inspiration is the greatest gift one can give to another. So what sets Silent Crowd apart from other brands is that you have the power to make a difference. You literally wear something that means power and you’re here to make a change. Yes, I’m the CEO and creator of the brand, but I try to lead by example and move in love. I do cool things and I like to inspire people to better themselves.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
I am proud of the fact that people love Silent Crowd so much that they get the logo tattooed on themselves. I know 14 people who have the tattoo on them and they tell me that I’ve changed their lives, it’s moments like these in my career that I look back and realize how I have an impact on someone and how open they are about it. I also get a lot of requests to tattoo people, whether it be my logo or some of my artwork. I am very proud of these accomplishments.
