Meet Myriah Marquez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Myriah Marquez.

Myriah, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
At age eleven I became really ill, being in and out of the hospital taught me quickly how precious life was and that I wanted to experience all that I could. At age eleven, I also picked up Skateboarding, more as a security blanket within the lifestyle rather than the sport.

At age 18, I hit the road and never really looked back, I’ve always longed for a sense of community and involvement. I ended up in Venice, CA at age 25 and met a few other Womxn that skated. We started just with intentions to meet other Womxn to skate with. This quickly grew with such incredible support from the community, so we decided to expand, we have now hosted; skate mentorships, parties to raise money for local and abroad non- profits, bi-weekly skate meets, as well as now have “chapters” in New York, San Diego and soon Brazil. <3

Flashback throughout the years until now, I have always been intrigued by perspective and moments in time. Leading me to fiddle with film and photography. This year I made my first short experimental doc, and have had the absolute privilege of having my film selected for a few festivals. Most recently being a Paris Premiere!?!?! in the Surf Skate Film Festival. (still so like what?!?!?)

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Hahaha, no not at all smooth. Even still, I mean I live in a van…

Struggles along the way:

(ya know I was gonna make a list, but truly I am fortunate and I hate to ever seem like I am complaining)

Instead, I’d like to say, I have experienced the scariest of demons and scenes. Ones I can’t even explain… moments that make you blackout. However, the amount of love I have also experienced is what should be celebrated.

The most important thing to remember is that we all have our demons, we all have our shadow spaces. Recognize yourself in another and move through and with Love.

We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I along with eight other founded GrlSwirl <3

In the early days of GRLSWIRL, we had no idea what was going to come. We were simply like-minded/hearted Grls that came together through skateboarding. We met my sixth day in CA, and at that time, I was living in my car. As our relationships grew, we realized our goals and hobbies aligned and just kind of went for whatever “it” was. Somehow and I think only through absolute perfect timing and the purest of intention did GRLSWIRL turn into a beautiful grassroots movement.

We had massive community support and wild outreach from other creatives wanting to collaborate. So we sat down and had our first official meeting, we discussed what it was in our wildest dreams we would do. On the top of that list was empowering other Womxn, LGBTQA+ through skate and philanthropy. So we took what we had, went from there, and the parties literally began. Hehe.

I’d say I am most proud of the Community and others that bring the spirit to GrlSwirl. Truly it is so inspiring to be surrounded by such uplifting and supportive people. It brings me hope in humanity and allows me a space to be my truest self and opens a space of love and acceptance for others at the same time.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I’m honestly not sure I believe in luck, rather its the intentions and karmic cycle of what you take and put back out into the world. My illness at times, I guess to some could be considered “bad luck” however without this experience, I wouldn’t have the understanding that came with it. So in turn this created “good luck” in the sense of being compassionate for others along with many other life/heart lessons.

There’s a saying a really like, “who’s to say if it’s good or bad”.
