Today we’d like to introduce you to Michelle Barrera.
Hi Michelle, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
At Her Table is a vibrant organization that brings a spotlight to the thriving hospitality and culinary scene of California’s Central Coast. Our mission is to uplift and celebrate women-owned and co-owned businesses in the food, beverage, and lodging industries. We provide valuable support, promotion, education, and networking opportunities, along with an exciting annual festival. Our goal is to create a more inclusive and diverse industry, one empowered woman at a time.
The organization was born from a conversation between Dina Samson (Co-owner of Rossoblu & Co-founder of Re:Her in Los Angeles) and myself. The world was in the middle of a pandemic and I was looking for support to create a 6-course to-go dinner box. Dina went above and beyond to connect me with the resources I needed to make it happen. What’s funny is I never ended up doing the to-go box, instead the conversation led to me creating a women’s organization of my own. Life is funny that way. I’m beyond honored to work with so many amazing people in the industry that want to support women.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I wouldn’t call it a smooth road but it’s definitely a road full of surprises.
As a leader, you will always face challenges. You won’t know everything but the best part is having people you can lean on for support. I’ve been very lucky with that and am surrounded by a community of people who want to see everyone succeed.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am most proud of my colorful background in entrepreneurship. From a young age, I have been involved in various business ventures, surrounded by entrepreneurs and artists during my time in Los Angeles. So much of what I’ve created has been driven by my passion for art, storytelling, and community service.
In addition to my entrepreneurial pursuits, I am also a Registered Nurse (RN). This unique aspect of my life provides me with a distinct experience and perspective. Nursing has taught me to see people in a different light and handle situations with a different level of sensitivity. When life and death are part of your everyday reality, you learn to prioritize what truly matters and not sweat the small stuff.
This unique combination of skill sets has given me a special perspective that enhances my ability to connect with people on a deeper level.
What makes you happy?
I find my greatest happiness in the freedom I possess. It is the most valuable thing in my life, and I am incredibly grateful to have the ability to make my own choices and learn from my mistakes. Having a support system that allows me to embrace this freedom further enhances my happiness.
Being able to live a life true to myself, without the constraints of societal expectations or limitations, brings me immense happiness. I cherish the opportunity to embrace my individuality and make choices that align with my values and aspirations.
