Meet Melinda Brownstone of Brownstone Designs

Today we’d like to introduce you to Melinda Brownstone.

Melinda, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started in garden design, then a client said can you make my house look the same as you did my garden and I said why not! I had already remodeled my own home, had a soft furnishings design business, and I felt confident to create a beautiful space for a treasured client! I came from a long line of interior designers and fine artists, and thus my design career was born. I have the better part of almost three decades creating personalized environments from retail spaces to home spaces, working for single moms, to Superbowl champions, Hollywood celebrities to Hollywood lawyers, I have been fortunate to work for clients for decades, building homes, remodeling, decorating and doing dream jobs, from secret children’s play room hidden by a bookshelf with a secret door, to chateaus with a dream La Cornue oven. I have been blessed to have clients from all walks of life and all tastes of style.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Fortunately, I was a garden designer before I started interiors, so when one was slow, I was busy with another. The struggle for an interior designer generally is that we are not just “doing someone’s home”, we play a role of marriage counselor, negotiator, contractor, and often the “heavy” to get the job done! I would never call the job easy, but I would say, I love all the challenges and parts, good and bad.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
My specialty is color! I am known for choosing the perfect palette to bring out the best emotions from any client to exact the very sensation they want to feel in the space, whether a professional business space, child’s room, or a home, I have a special ability to “pluck” the concept out of my clients’ thoughts and make it a reality. I love that I have never had a client who was unhappy with the services and products I delivered. I am proud that I have been successful for decades in creating magical environments that allow my clients (mostly artists of one kind or another), to flourish in their life and career because when they come home they are in an ideal environment that allows them to be fully realized and be themselves wholly. I am a lifestyle designer which means I am uniquely qualified to do anything from landscape, events, home remodeling and interior design, I create whole environments to build a perfect life.

What matters most to you?
Building an ideal environment to achieve any goal a client sets out to accomplish. It’s important to me because when you get home and you don’t feel “at home”, it makes it very difficult to confront and handle one’s life. I am a firm believer that when you are comfortable in your environment, at home or office, with the correct design of the space you are far more able to attain any goals you set for yourself.
